Expected something like this to be uncovered sooner or later in some way, shape or form. The Connie Mack Days of baseball are long gone. Will be following developments.

The N.Y. Times article alleges that the break-in occurred from a computer in a house in which a Cardinals official "had lived". The break-in was allegedly performed by using passwords that were known to be used by Luhnow and his assistants when they were with the Cardinals. It could well have been a current Cardinals' employee, but it just as easily could have been an ex-employee (perhaps one who was fired by Luhnow) getting even.

It's a bit early to start throwing the Cardinals in with the Patriots. Maybe wait until charges have actually been filed first.

I hope they come up with a more original name for it than "Spy Gate II"

It's way worse than the Pats as alleged. This puts people in jeopardy of federal prison.

Plus, it's not just what is in the Astros stuff, it is how knowing who is talking to the Astros about who helps the third party (Birds) beyond belief. For example, what if Cards found out Sox talking about Lackey.

Absolutely correct... as alleged. But, in the U.S. justice system, allegations do not result in prison sentences.

Yeah. Everything is alleged until convicted. But, If you think that FBI isn't going to scare the ever living crap out of people and turn them left and right and get convictions.,,,well.,. That's what they do. Cards have to pray for what seems the most unlikely result.....two low level guys and not beyond with no squealing.

if they were the best, they wouldn't have gotten caught.... at face value, it seems more like someone with a grudge against Luhnow more than probing for info/data/'secrets' to use in your own org... if you're going to secretly hack someone for important info, it doesn't make much sense to then publish that on the net for all to see (and thus alerting your target their system has been hacked).

but that's just my 2 cents... we'll see what comes out with the investigations.

I bet, if true, that this is going to be one of those "low-level flunky gets stupid idea, and even worse, gets caught" things in which nobody on the executive level had any idea that this was going on. Yeah, right.

EDIT: Interesting lesson here, in that the scheme allegedly involved Cards personnel applying the master password list that Luhnow apparently took with him and reused when he built a similar database with the Astros. Don't reuse passwords!

So you have to rename your children and change your birthdate when you switch jobs?

It's no big deal; everyone does it and baseball teams have been hacking each other's computer databases all the way back to the 1800s.

Up untill the early 2000s GOD was still one of the most commonly used system administrator passwords. The 1995 movie Hackers told the entire world (well movie watching world) all of the top 5 system admin passwords at the time. The list they said in the movie was the real top 5 list from the prior year.

It seems the hacking has gotten worse! As of a few moments ago MLB.com appears to be down. The Cardinals are trying to delete the evidence!!!
