Other than bringing in an aging back up catcher and trading a mediocre center fielder for a bag of balls; there has been no activity.

Have I missed something? (Please tell me that I've missed something!)

I'm cautiously optimistic about this season. If we had just split the season series with Cleveland last year, we're not only in the playoffs but quite possible division champs. That's with JD, Casty, Norris, Zimmermann all missing significant time, Upton struggling for the first 2/3 of the season, Cabrera and VMart both going through completely random midseason slumps, and Fullmer not arriving until May.

With better health and further maturation of the other 2 young pitchers (Norris and Boyd), I really feel like this should be a playoff team this season. Maybe I'm just TOO optimistic, but the only true question marks I see are CF (Collins? Mahtook? Jones?) and the garbage fire trio of pitchers (Sanchez, Pelfrey, and Lowe). If we can even get solid D out of CF and 1 of the 3 expensive pitchers can deliver some decent innings out of the pen, this team actually begins to look, dare I say it, good.

Then again I could just as easily see EVERYTHING fall apart and have them only win 75. The margin for error is tiny and another year full of injuries or a regression or 2 and we're doomed.

Injuries are what have me worried. Too many older guys and not enough proven talent as backups. If everyone stays healthy and can be as productive as last year (a bit more consistency would be nice too) there is a shot at the division.

I think they are banking on Jones blossoming this year and have no back up plan to boost offense or defensive capability in the outfield. It certainly could all break right but this is Detroit. :-)

Can't wait for ST to open!

Sure would be nice to see Sanchez regroup and put together a quality season.

Truth be told last year I predicted 2nd place no playoffs and this year I predicting 3rd place and not in playoff hunt around Labor day

Yes I am a fan of Detroit Tigers but standing flat footed and not trading a couple players before the 10/5 rule kicks in and getting value instead now stuck with them

Would love to be in their board room and see what really goes on behind the scene. Also give my opinions too HEHE. as if any team would listen to any of us LOL

After 2 outings Anibal Sanchez's line:

2.2IP 9H 8R 7ER 3BB 2K 2HR

Yes, it's only just spring training, but it's almost worth losing $16.8M just to get rid of him. Or, maybe Al Avila can talk him into retiring.

Sanchez gets rocked again. He did make it through the 1st and 2nd, but then gave up 2 bombs in the 3rd. Says he has 2 more Spring starts and that should be plenty of time to right the ship. Ugh!

Sanchez's last two outings:

8IP 2H 0R 0ER 0BB 10K 0HR

These times came after he made some very minor adjustments to his delivery. I'll take this Sanchez over the other one.

I think I still trust Boyd more as the 5th starter at this point, but it sure would be nice if Sanchy found SOMETHING and can give us some solid innings in some role this year. I'm sure we're going to need more than 5 starters at some point, and someone who's able to be versatile with some good innings out of the pen sure would be nice as well.

Bought my Opening Day ticket the other day!

I was pretty shocked when it wasn't a total sellout quite yet in mid March and it's always been one of my goals to at least be in Detroit, if not at the game for the home opener. Couldn't pass it up.

April 7th can't get here fast enough!

From an outsider looking in, why haven't the Tigers unloaded Cabrera, Martinez, or Verlander yet? Dombrowski murdered the farm system and it seems any one of those three will bring back something from a contender.

Just curious...

They want to get really good returns for them. Al Avila is not just trying to dump salary. He's trying to lessen salary while trying to stay as competitive as possible. And he's willing to sit on their big salaries if he doesn't feel like Detroit will get a good return for a trade.

Detroit Tigers: Anibal Sanchez May Have Landed a Spot in the Rotation

Sanchez may be pitching so well right now that he may have a spot in the starting rotation. But, if he does, I don't think he's bumping Boyd out. I think he may be bumping Zimmermann out. Zimm, for whatever reason is not doing so well this spring.

Tigers release reliever Lowe

One deadwood down. Does Pelfrey get the axe soon too?

The only way Anibal would be bumping Zimmermann is if Zim is still hurt. I think there's a 0% chance a guy with that contract goes to the pen right now, and he's been around long enough to turn down a trip to the minors.

If Sanchez is in I think it means Boyd to Toledo. If do he'll be back up fairly soon, once someone is hurt.
