Mike Ilitch passes away
Mike Ilitch, owner of Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, dies at age 87
He was a great man who did much for sports and the city itself in Detroit. RIP Mr. Ilitch. |

So sad. He seemed to be one of the very few beloved owners. I figured he didn't have much time left, but I hoped he'd live a lot longer, or at least long enough to see his Tigers win a championship first. I hope Detroit honours him with a statue. He really did do a lot for the city, not just with the teams, but in a lot of ways.

Sad news. Ilitch was a great owner. He turned Detroit into Hockeytown.
It's just too bad he didn't fire Ken Holland before he left us.

They won 4 cups with Ilitch as owner. Not sure why the dislike for Holland, architect of some very good teams in Detroit.

As far as Holland goes, he has constructed some great teams in the past. But he's quickly being outpaced by the rest of the GMs in the league. The old ways of building a roster doesn't work anymore and his refusal to evolve are making him a liability. He's doled out so many bad contracts over the past four or five years that it makes you wonder if he's all there anymore. I really wished he would have stepped up the a VP position and snagged Yzerman as GM when he had the chance a few years ago.

He was a great owner, no doubt about it. He was trying so hard the past 10+ years to make the Tigers a winner, he wanted badly to see them win a World Series title, willing to spend anything it took to bring the talent needed for it. It's really sad he won't get to see that happen now, or his passion project of Little Caesar's Arena completed. That stadium and its district that are being created were his ideas, and mostly covered by him. At least the franchises are in good hands with his wife.
