Strikezone Consistency: A's / Red Sux Game (PS 1918)
I think it's ok for the strikezone to be different between umps, but when the strikezone constantly changes throughout the game that's just wrong.
Great example was last night/this mornings A's/Red1918Sux game. I have never in my life seen umping that terrible. Well, I lie, but it's been awhile. The strikezone was just bizarre. Pitches down the middle of the plate were balls. Then they were strikes. Then balls again. An inch to the outside of the plate was a ball, but 2 inches out was a strike. Then later the inch away was a strike, but then later again it was a ball. A pitch mid thigh was a ball, while belt buckle was a strike. Then later both were balls, then later both were strikes. Call just a consistant zone! No matter how bad it is, just be consistant. It was just terrible, I was so angry the outcome of the game was going to rest on bad umping rather than the players on the field. I didn't want my Chokeland to lose by one of the dozen horrible umping calls, and I didn't want them to win by one either. Someone needs to be accountable for this. PS: I'm an accountant, and I have sharp pencils.

Same issue in the Cubs/Braves game 1.
Froemming is not a very good ump, at least not during game 1. He was squeezing both teams and inconsistently.

Well, it used to be the case that for the postseason in MLB umpires were simply rotated, meaning that eventually any senior umpire could get a chance to umpire a playoff game. In other words, there was no accounting for actual ability, only seniority (not sure if this is still the case).
In the NFL and NHL, the officials are constantly graded throughout the season by the heads of officiating for the respective league. At the end of the regular season, those officals who had the highest grades based on their regular season performances were given the chance to officiate postseason games. In other words, the officials were chosen on the basis of their abilities (at least that is my understanding of how it works). Draw your own conclusions as to which system is the better...
