When does Gregg Popovich get his due?

Just wondering when everyone wants to talk about Phil Jackson, Larry Brown, or the brothers Van Gundy when does 2-time ring winner, one-time coach of the year, 3-time best record in the NBA, current highest winning % of all NBA coaches, 8th highest playoff winning %, and currently gunning for his 3rd ring in 9 years coach Gregg Popovich get his due?

I love Larry Brown and think he's a fabulous coach, but his career NBA accomplishments pale compared to Pop, yet he is considered the current coaching genius of the league. Where's the love for the guy who really is the current best in the biz?

He will probably never get the credit he deserves. Certain coaches are media darlings and Pop just isn't one of them.

Pop epitomizes the Spurs. They are a reflection of the coach. Professional. And, the best for the last decade.

Just ask Larry Brown; he'll tell you all about how great a coach Popovich is. They're best friends. Pop was Brown's best man in his wedding.

Larry Brown is on the local sports radio afternoon show a couple times a week, and usually, at least once each time, he mentions Popovich and how much he respects him as a coach, a "great" coach.

Serious basketball fans know how good Pop is. Whether the rest of the population does or does not doesn't really affect anything all that much.

I thought he did get alot of recognition, seems San Antonio fans love him and the team

Larry Brown doesn't have the success, because Brown likes rebuilding, and then he gets bored when everything is in place. I mean he sent the Clippers to the playoffs

Phil Jackson is a parasite, he clings to the greatest player or players in the league and they excel while he gets credit, then he heads out when the player leaves

Pop is easily one of the top 2 or 3 coaches in the league if not the best. The 2 things that separate him from Larry Brown are the fact that Pop isn't a nomad and can get along with his players and he's a better judge of talent.

I honestly have no clue what Cleveland or any other NBA team would be thinking hiring Brown has a GM or some other position involving personnel. Brown is a GREAT X's and O's coach, as good as any ever but he is a HORRIBLE judge of talent.

The thing is, Larry Brown is the most boring coach in the league and gets all the publicity. Have you ever watched one of his press conferences? The guy shows zero emotion, even after winning a title he's like a robot.

Pop is the best coach in the league. What sets him apart is not only his ability to make outstanding adjustments, but also his sense of humor. He constantly makes cracks in the huddle to lossen up his players and is really effective in that manner.

I think that was true for a while, but Duncan gets all the credit he deserves now.

Popovich is really, really good. Too often, Popovich gets obscured by Duncan, which is a shame because he is easily a top four coach along with Brown, Sloan, and Carlisle. You don't really have to look further than the defense. Duncan, granted, is the anchor of the defense, but Popovich is responsible for the incredible disclipline and the great rotation. Yet, with all the help defense that the Spurs run, you rarely see the Spurs give up wide open looks.

The Spurs are a 'boring' team. They play a slow defensive games of basketball and all of their players know their roles and keep their mouths shut. And look at the past 15 years of the teams stars.
You have Robinson who came from a good family and you never heard anything bad about and chances are he never did anything bad. He was the Christy Matheson of basketball.
Then you have Duncan who is more or less the game. A quiet shy guy whom I have never heard anyone say anything bad about.
Both are my two favourite basketball players.
Then you have Tony Parker who is a nice guy and fairly reserved and quiet. Manu is fiery out of the court and a little dramtic but is always genial with the media.
Not a single asshat in the group.
They don't have the badboy image of Detroit. The flash of Miami or the soap opera of last years Lakers. But they are as good a team as any of them.
And Pop himself is not really the nicest 'looking' guy. A hard rigid face and keeps his jaw set most of the time in a scowl. He is never nasty to the media but he usualy says what needs to be said or what is on his mind and says it in as few words as he can.

Boring? No way! Perhaps in the past, but Manu and Parker are an absolute joy to watch.

I don't think the Spurs were ever boring in terms of style of play. But with Duncan as the face of the team, the team, unfairly or not, was categorized as boring because of their personalities.

Yeah, I've always enjoyed watching them play but this year they have been one of my favorite teams to check out.

How many times did you hear Stoudamire in this series, and they lost 4-1

Just like real life, if you just do your job and not make noise or quips, some lesser flashier guy gets all the publicity

What's strange is that I would much rather listen to Duncan be interviewed than somebody like Stoudamire or the unbelievably boring Nash. He's extremely smart and also a funny guy.

The media likes new things. During the Spurs title run in '99 though, it was all about Duncan and the media was all over him. That's just how the media operates.
