First off, he was known far and wide as Sandy Ferguson. Second, his birthplace country was Canada. One of his managers was Harry Pollock.

Big Sandy Ferguson had worked in his teens as a lumberjack in the deepwoods of New Brunswick, and was later known in Canada as "The Fightin' Lumberjack". In his prime he stood 6' 3 1/2" in his stocking feet and carried 225 lbs. on his broad frame. Never a particularly skilled boxer, Ferguson liked to mix it up inside, bull the other fighter with his greater strength and thump the other fella's rib-cage with great sweeping hammer-blows. He used his thick forearms to ward off punches, and was not adverse to using the occasional elbow in close like the tavern brawler he was. Big Sandy relied on his great stamina and solid beard to keep him in the fight while he wore the other guy down. In the end, John Barleycorn was one opponent he lost to on a regular basis.
