Gault was a decent boxer with a pretty good punch. He won the 112 lb. national Golden Gloves crown in 1948 and made his pro debut in November of the same year. Won the North American bantam title from Canada's Ferando Gagnon. Lost the title in his first defense to Billy Peacock on a split decision.
Was a popular fighter in the 50s due to his TV appearences. Among the name boxers he faced are Bill Bossio, Babe Echeverria, Robert cohen, Billy Lima, Willie Towel, and Willie Pep. Outpointed by Jimmy Caruthers in the only world title shot he ever received. A lifelong resident of spartenburg, South Carolina, he died, sadly, as a shooting victim there in 1971.
