Ray Lunny, "The Pride of the Missions", turned pro in 1938 after a uccessful run as an amateur. Undefeated in his first 31 fights, Lunny became a ranked title competitor. Chalky Wright handed him his first pro loss shortly before Pearl Harbor interrupted his career. He enlisted in the Coast Guard and became a WWII poster boy for that service arm. After the war he attempted a comeback but his timing was shot. This coupled with a long-time problem with brittle hands led to his retirement. The former boxer stayed involved with the ring as coach of Stanford University's boxing team. His sun Ray Lunny III was a contender in the 70s. Ray Lunny was an inductee into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.
