Born Leonard Renaud in the Quebec hinterland, Jack Renault first garnered the attention of the boxing wise guys when he won an easy decision in Boston over veteran Porky Flynn in 1920. Like a later Canadian heavyweight prospect he was thrown in the deep end of the pool against top notchers, in this case Harry Greb and Billy Miske. Amazingly, he stayed the limit. In 1922 he boxed exhibitions with champion Jack Dempsey, and impressed the Manassa Mauler enough to be hired on as a regular sparring partner. He was never to get a chance to fight the Champ for real, but made a name for himself as a top ranked heavyweight contender during the roaring twenties. Among his many victims were Fred Fulton, Tom Cowler, Soldier Jones, Big George Godfrey, Floyd Johnson, Bartley Madden, and Quinton Romero Rojas. Renault had a granite chin, a snapping left jab and a beauty of a right that put many opponents to sleep.

Renault's manager of record was Leo P. Flynn. One of his trainers was Jimmy DeForrest. He had a reach of 76 inches. At his peak his homebase was New York City though he kept a house in Montreal.
