Link to an article in our local paper on Matt Remillard a few days ago.

It would appear that plans to go west are on hold for a while. According to Boxrec, he will be part of a CES (groan) card at the Hartford Convention Center on September 15. The linked article suggests that it may be for a jr title of some sort.

If that materializes, I may go as I have only had the chance to see him twice to-date (4th and 6th fights). If Thunder, Romultiltus and anyone else in the area are available perhaps we can get together.

Christopher

Ok, we are a month away from the bout, the date has been changed, no opponents have been slotted for the under card and Clown Entertainment and Sports is the promoter.

I think that I'll have to pass on this one after all. The whole thing could change the night before the fight and they put on the awful shows anyway.

The Convention Center? C'mon brother, keep the faith. Can we make, tentative plans . . . about as tentative as the card, say?

I'd have no problem heading up to Hartford, except that I have Yankees/Red Sox tickets for that Friday (Sept. 15) and won't be around.
Maybe next time...

I'm in on tentative plans but won't be pre-ordering any tickets. It's slated for the 23rd now, so maybe we all can go. After the nonsense with CES and the Cap Cod card though I have my doubts. They moved that date and Remillard was removed well after ticket sales had begun.

Sorry folks, but a Matt Godfrey head-liner isn't enough to make me all that interested.

Hey, I just noticed that the kid from Hebron is on that card too. That adds a few bonus points for me.

I notice that you don't like Matt Godfrey. Is he overrated or something? I saw him once on ESPN and was impressive.

I only saw him the one time in Providence and wasn't terribly impressed. I thought Estrada looked better and we only saw a few minutes of him before his bout ended in an NC. I may be a little jaded because he looks like a CES pump and dump fighter to me. He is hyped by them like you wouldn't believe and I haven't got much respect for them.

Anyway, maybe he will go far but I wouldn't bet on it - he is hyped as being quick for his size and very smooth - I saw a somewhat lazy fighter in Providence; a lot of leaning and not as much activity as I had been led to believe that I would see from him.

The CES pulls some shady deals with their cards as you mentioned. Godfrey is facing Danny Batchelder on the 9/23 card and he is coming off a close loss to Brain Minto. I really think Batchelder could pull off the upset and the fight I saw Godfrey on ESPN was the one against Sean George back in May. You could not really judge anything by a first round TKO. That is why I asked.

With the fight I saw, Mateen was a shot, sitting duck and Godfrey still laid on him a bit. Good grief, it was a two round fight with a shot has-been (apologies to the Ernest Mateen fans out there). It didn't take much to punch Mateen's ticket and Godfrey didn't give us much.

If he ends up being a big time fighter, I'll eat my words and chalk this up to my dislike of his promoter but I don't think so.

The guys he has fought are pretty much an unknown commodity except Mateen. Batchelder is a definite step-up and should guage where Godfrey's career is headed.

Boxrec is now noting that Remillard's September fight will be for the WBC Youth Super Featherweight Title.

Still no stated opponent though.

I wouldn't be surprised if CES gets some lame duck opponent for Remillard. I feel bad for Matt because he should be fighting much better opposition than what he is being given. Hopefully once he gets away from CES, he can go to the Southwest and fight guys at his natural weight.

I'm not sold on Godfrey, Jason Estrada . . or Joey Spina.
They all fight TCs for like 20 fights. Even though Peter Mandredo is another CES guy, I'm not surprised if he beats Spina in Oct.

I think all the guys you mentioned are ridiculously overrated. If Manfredo fights anyone in the top ten, he'll get whooped badly. Most of these guys have feasted on bums or over the hill fighters. The only guy I have hope for is Remillard.....if he can get away from CES.

Boxrec is now showing that Jose Hernandez will be Remillard's opponent for the WBC Youth Super Featherweight Title Fight this month. I don't know anything about this kid but he is 6-0-0 from Fort Worth and has faced at least one veteran.

If this opponent sticks, I am definitely going to the fight. Could be a good yard stick bout.

Boxing back in Hartford!
Sunday, September 3 2006

Rhode Island promoter Jimmy Burchfield returns on September 23 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, Connecticut with a card that features cruiserweight Matt Godfrey against Danny Batchelder. Also appearing on the card are USBO 122 pound champion Mike Oliver, former NABF 135 pound champion Israel "Pito" Cardona, 2004 U.S. Olympian heavyweight Jason Estrada and up and coming featherweight Matt Remillard. At the event, trainer and former world title challenger "Iceman" John Scully and current WBA 154 pound champion Jose Antonio Rivera will be inducted into "CES Promotions Ring Of Honor" joining "Irish" Mickey Ward, Marlon Starling and Vinny Pazienza. For tickets call 401-724-2254.

I guess the card in Hartford is official. Are any of the CT crew planning on going. I can make it - just have to find out ticket pricing.

That is the type of opponents I like to see Matt face. This guy from Forth Worth looks like a prospect of some sort. Any FW opponent from Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and even Juarez (Mexico) would be ideal for him. Outstanding talent from that area.
