Bad news on the homefront.
Remillard injured his wrist in winning the WBC Youth Super Featherweight title and will need surgery. He is expected to be out of action for nine months. Matt's camp had been in negotiations to defend the title on the Klitschko-Brock undercard.

Also, I would have said 'winning' rather than winning, but that's just me. ![]()

I know he's received less fanfare from us Nutmeggers, but Mike (aka Mike-Mike or The Machine Gun) Oliver headlines a card at the Mohegan Sun Saturday.
Oliver (16-0, 7 KO) fights Adam Carrera (18-1, 8) for the USBA Jr. Featherweight title. According to Box Rec, it's a nine-bout card . . . Seven four-rounders, but still.

MW - Elvin Ayala
Previously undefeated MW Elvin Ayala from New Haven lost his first bout. I had been hoping that there would eventually be a showdown against the other undefeated MW/SMW New Haven prospect Chad Dawson.
Outpoints Ayala over 10... November 24, 2006 The Roxy, Boston, MA Text: Shane Hennigan at Ringside. Portland, Oregon's David Banks spent Thanksgiving Day traveling cross-country to take on New Haven, Connecticut middleweight prospect Elvin Ayala in the main event at The Roxy in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday. Banks (12-1-1, 2 KOs) was a last minute replacement when veteran Freddy Cuevas was forced to withdraw three days before the fight due to an injury he sustained while training and subsequently retired. Banks apparently saved a good deal of his "Turkey Day" hunger for the ring, earning a split-decision victory over the previously unbeaten Ayala (16-1, 7 KOs). Banks used a measured offense to score early over the Ayala. Ayala was never able to counter the superior timing and ring generalship of Banks. Following the bout, a somber Ayala simply stated: "Tonight wasn't my night. But, hey, this is what I do. I'll be back, and hopefully he'll give me a rematch." |

PROVIDENCE (November 25, 2006) -- CES Team physician and renowned hand surgeon Dr. Steven Margeles reports that Matt "Sharp Shooter" Remillard's wrist surgery at Lahey Clinic in Burlington (MA) on November 17 was successful.
Matt had a major tear of a ligament between two small bones in his left wrist. According to Dr. Margeles, Matt's bones shifted position leaving no stability when he punched and, if left alone, the injury would have ended his boxing career. Remillard potentially will be back in the ring in six months. His initial healing process, including exercises to regain mobility, will be three months. He will start anaerobic training in 10 weeks and sparring 14 weeks after surgery. "We feel everything went well," Remillard's head trainer Paul Cichon said. "I talked to Matt and he's in some pain. Dr. Margeles is one of the best, if not the best hand surgeon in boxing. If Matt does what Dr. Margeles tells him, we're confident that Matt will return better than ever." November 21 was declared "Matt Remillard Day" in his hometown of Manchester, Connecticut. Remillard (11-0, 7 KOs) captured the vacant WBC Youth super featherweight title in his last fight, September 23 in Hartford via a unanimous 10-round decision against previously unbeaten Jose Hernandez (6-0).

Again, no comment really needed, but . . . I did see the fight a few nights ago. Pretty typical (lackluster) Deep Six performance. There just have to be days where he gets to the gym, put in 20 minutes and thinks . . . this stuff is hard work . . .then goes home. He lost to a guy he had gone 3-0 against as an ammy. This guy was an Olympian!? About the only conclusion I can make is that he just hasn't progressed. I just can't see him getting anywhere as a pro.

Chad Dawson to fight for WBC LHW Title
12/15/2006
Dawson to fight WBC lightweight champ Sean Barker , Sports Editor Chad Dawson is finally getting his title shot, Dawson, New Haven’s light heavyweight contender, will fight WBC world champion Tomasz Adamek Feb. 3 at Miami Arena, the night before the Super Bowl. "It would be great to win and then go to the Super Bowl the next day," said Dawson, who has not fought since winning a unanimous decision against Eric Harding June 2 in Ynez, Calif. "It’s great to get the opportunity to get such a big fight and the opportunity to take my career to the next level. It’s always exciting to get back in the ring, but it’s even more exciting to get back in the ring knowing that it will be so big for my career." The bout will be aired on Showtime. The 24-year old Dawson is 23-0 with 15 knockouts. Adamek won the title May 21, 2005, by defeating Paul Briggs. He also defeated Briggs Oct. 7 in Rosemont, Ill., in a rematch. Adamek recovered from being knocked down in the first and survived losing a point for low blows in the ninth. He is 31-0 with 21 knockouts. Light heavyweight is the 175-pound division. The 30-year old Adamek was born in Zywiec, Poland, and lives in Jersey City, New Jersey. "I’ve really been fighting hard for this fight," Dawson’s manager Mike Criscio said. "They wanted us to go to another elimination fight, but we’ve already done that twice. No one wants to fight him, Once he wins the title, everyone is going to want to fight him." "That’s boxing," Dawson said. "You take it and go with it." Dawson has been training in New Haven, and will leave for Las Vegas on Dec. 26. His second son was born last month. Criscio said since Bernard Hopkins vacated his title, Criscio is hoping to get this bout for the WBA title as well. He said Dawson would eventually want to fight Jermain Taylor, the present middleweight (160) champion, if Taylor moved up a class. Dawson would have to move down to super middleweight (168). Dawson is 6-foot-3, Adamek 6-2 1/2. "I think Adamek is slow, he’s there to hit, doesn’t move his head much and I think Chad will snap him in half," Criscio said. "I saw his last fight," Dawson said. "He’s a tall guy like me, with good hand speed, and nice a little punch. We’ll take time to break him down." Sean Barker can be reached at sbarker@nhregister.com |

Enrique Palau R.I.P.
Wednesday, December 20 2006
Unbeaten junior middleweight Enrique "El Palo" Palau (7-0, 5 KOs) who defeated Hollister Elliott on Friday night in Boston, was killed along with a female passenger in a one car accident early Tuesday morning in Worchester, Massachusetts. He was 27. He was one of the local fighters (Worcester, MA) on the Connecticut Convention Center card in Hartford back in September. It's always sad when a young life is lost in a car accident. |

Yeah, really good matchup. Dawson is an impressive youngster. I think it should be a fairly action packed(fingers crossed)fight. Neither guy is afraid to mix it up and both have pretty good overall skills.

We have a real champion from CT: Travis Simms, who has gotten no love from the locals on the board. That's pretty much because he's from Norwalk and Fairfield county thinks they are part of NY . . plus he hadn't fought in two years, but he looked pretty decent Saturday.
I'm not sure how he'll match up with the best at 154, but just the fact that he's a possible opponent for a Floyd or DeLa is pretty amazing after his recent inactivity.
