Check the Tech Support Folder
This issue has been addressed before. Set your folder to go back to posts in the past two months and you will find a thread in the Tech Support folder started by stevebydac dealing with the issue. I think there was also a series of posts on this issue starting around mid-Feb. if I recall in this folder by Mudster as well. This is in my view a major bug in the game that has not been fixed by the new patch -- you can however minimize the harm done by making sure you back up the files in your data folder for your active database, in particular the ratingsrecord.dat file and the fighters.dat file, as those are the ones likely to cause crashes.
Feel free to post either here or there with follow-up questions or results. based on your experience. Update, just after posting I found the earlier thread from Mudster (click on link below), this is the best advice I can offer, good luck! Ok, I tried doing that, but I'm still getting the same problem. When I first tried, my .bak file had more info than my .dat file just as you said, so I deleted the .dat file, and renamed the .bak file. Still no good. When I checked things out a second time, the .dat file had more than the .bak file, so now I'm completely confused. Not sure if you know what to do in this situation? Thanks for all the help!

Hmmm ...
... seems a little strange, and I'm reluctant to give too much advice here because (1) I really am a novice in terms of computer skills and (2) not sure of all the details of your situation. When you say it didn't work, I assume you mean after substituting the bigger file and then starting the game, you still get the "No Rating Record found for XXX (name of fighter)" -- right? I think what that means is there are fighter records in your database such that when the computer then goes through loading this "ratingrecords.dat" file it still can't find them. One option you have is to click the "yes" screen knowing that for each boxer you click on it will zero out the rating record. If it's a fighter you don't care about (an inactive boxer or maybe a tomato can you downloaded or such), that's probably not an issue -- you can always download and insert the file later. If on the other hand, it's someone you have a fight history for (and you want to keep that fight history, record, stats, etc. because it's a fighter in your active database that you care about), what you will have to do is find the ratings from another source and probably enter them in by hand on the now blank ratings screen. This of course can take alot of time if you have to do this for say 100 fighters or more. (I actually went through this process when I was initially hit with the bug, not knowing any better but also because I had invested several months in my active universe, all of which of course is why I do the backups now.)
The other option, which would be the easier way out (but one that could put you back on square one, so to speak), but one that might be preferrable, particularly if you haven't really done that much with the boxer database that came with the game, is to go back and simply re-install the game or at least copy the ratingsrecord.dat file that came with the game into your active database -- I think what this should do is give you all the ratings records for the boxers that came with the game, but you may lose the fight histories, possibly. One of the tricky aspects of this situation (and one that frankly I would hope OOTP would look into a solution) is that if you get a missing file message with your currently active database, there is no way in the game to switch to an alternate database and perhaps transfer the boxer files that way. You have to exit, go to the c-drive and try to figure out what's missing and then get them in the currently active database before re-starting the game, which actually happened to me the other day when I switched to Mh's huge database and didn't get all the necessary files on the first pass. Oh well, back to the topic at hand ... I'm reluctant to offer more advice without knowing all the specifics, but you are welcome to post further with more details if you think additional help could be useful -- also feel free to send an email to ootp tech support... |
