Poll #2: Yearly Boxing Data Disks

This poll concerns returning to the practice of selling yearly data disks or specialty disks. The yearly disks would come out at the same time each year and consist of a minimum of 400 current fighters - rated only on their last six fights. These ratings would not factor in a fighter's entire career nor would they speculate on a fighter's future.

Even if I didn't use it, I would pay for it. I will buy anything you folks market (and in some case, several copies) just to add my two cents of support.

I selected I have no interest in current fighters because I strictly like to use historical pre-1980 boxers. However, I would certainly be willing to pay for decade disks that give us much more accurate ratings and detailed biographies of the lesser light historical fighters not included in the main game fighter database.

Jim, I'd definitely purchase your yearly updates!

I still recall being a kid & how much I looked forward to the new boxers with the old card game version.

The biggest surprise/jump in ratings I recall was Yoko Gushiken @ Fly. Just an average fighter one year & the next, a 10 HP punching machine!

One time my brother & I opened the package early to take a peek @ the new fighters because we couldn't wait until we received the updates as a present.

Our grandmother almost caught us in the act.

I think you could do a lot of things with this. The database that comes with the game is solid. Next you could sell "new fighter & update disks" I think if I bought a new disk and it only had updates on it, I wouldn't be happy. You'd need new fighters on it as well.

Here's things I see that would work.

once a year - new fighter disks for sale (but how do you keep people from posting those online?) with 3 month "updates" for free. These updates would have no new fighters, just updated current ones.

Every few months - you could sell a decades disk, or a year disk .... this disk would have fighters who debuted in a certain year or retired in a certain year. Rate about 100 fighter who aren't in the current archive. We don't care if they are mostly 1's and 2's ... maybe on these disks update some of the archive fighters with their different weight classes.

I would buy all of these ... it would be great to have 13,000 Trunzo rated fighters - even if it cost me $100 over time. I think the decade disks almost have to go hand in hand with the new fighters.

Good ideas mh!

Yes, I'd purchase what you're proposing as well.

$10 is a pretty low price to pay a year for updates. It's a sim most of us here seem addicted to. I'd pay more than that for something I enjoy this much & use on average of at least twice a week - that's 104 times a year.

That's a pretty good bargain!

I erroneously entered the second item in my poll response rather than the first and I don't know how to change it. I would buy it, and I don't care a hoot about the cost. I share Conn Chris's attitude about it.

For active fighters, I would also like to see the new files contain all of the fighter's previous TBCB career stage ratings.

So, for example, if you have a current fighter who at some point has been rated by TB at beginning, pre-prime & prime, and then with a new update the fighter moves to post-prime, all earlier ratings -- even if they occurred before the game had the ability to save multiple fighter ratings under a single file -- still appear in the new fighter file (with the most recent rating being the default).

Because I like to age fighters, it sure would be nice to use actual career stage ratings instead of the hypothetical ones where available.

I would love that and gladly pay 10 bucks for the update. I would like to see updates every 6 months...gladly pay for those as well. The more fighters the better in my opinion. I am probably one of the few who use the current fighters much more than the retired boxers. I only use current fighters in my universe. I use the retired fighters in tourneys most of the time. The more database updates the better. Great, great idea.

I'd pay $10 a year. I think adding the updates are good, too, after that. A fighter can go from exceptional to average in one fight and that would keep the database "updated" until the next year when you could renew a subscription.

Yearly updates

$10.00 a year for an update seems very reasonable to me. I sure wouldn't do that amount of work for nothing. Nice to finally get an update on a newer version.

What I would say is add new fighters to the disk you are selling, only do the occasional update for free. As long as there are 50 or so new boxers and updates in the disks we are buying then it's worth it. Those 50 new guys can then be updated in free updates through out the year.

Then every 3-4 months they can sell a year disk ... maybe 50-100 fighters from a certain year, whether they do it by start date or retire date. All the really great boxers are already made but I'm sure there are quite a few midrange guys we don't have. I'll look around boxrec this weekend and just try to get an example.

Sure most of those guys are rated by users and done real well but even the guys who rated them would like to have Jim's ratings to compare theirs to.

Only thing I see as an obstacle is how to prevent people from posting the ratings on the board once they have bought the disk.

I would pay for updates featuring new fighters, not updated current Fighters. I would rather see an improved aging system handle declining fighters within the game.

I would gladly dole out the money on a yearly basis for the
update data disk.I have had ongoing health problems for the
last couple of years, and may be finally turning the corner
as I was off the boards for nearly two years, and have come
back only recently.
