Dokiwari fight this Friday
Though I'll be working the day of the fight, I'm looking forward to see how big of an event it will be. They're billing it as a WBC Heavyweight title bout and technically it is, but it's not for the World Championship, it's for the USNBC.
The following is the article posted to fightnews.com: Dokiwari returns Friday! Zeferino Entertainment caps off a banner year with "Fists of Fury" this Friday at the Avi Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada. In the headliner, heavyweight Duncan Dokiwari (24-3, 21 KOs) takes the first step towards getting back into the world rankings in 2007 when he takes on Willie Palms (10-4-1, 5 KOs) in a ten round bout for the vacant WBC USNBC heavyweight title. In the co-main event, super middleweight Carlos De Leon Jr. (16-1-2, 11 KOs), son of the former cruiserweight champion of the world, continues his road towards the top ten as he takes on Ted Muller (19-8-2, 9 KOs). De Leon and Muller fought to a draw in 2005. The undercard features super middleweight Willie Stewart (22-2, 12 KOs) against William Gill (5-12, 4 KOs) in a six round fight. Also, welterweight Don Juan Futrell (16-3-1, 10 KOs) fights Francisco Maldonado (11-24-4, 2 KOs). |

Dokiwari had a near great fight with Guinn a few years back but then got wacked out in one round by a Philly heavy.

Zeferino Entertainment is known for their disgusting matchup choices. If you recall they had a card from Colorado this past summer on ESPN and all but one fight went past five rounds. The card was so bad that all the swing fights were used up before they could fill their alloted time space which was 9:30-11:30. It ended at 11:15 right after the Unity Young-Chantal Cordova joke. Young had no buisness being in the ring but Zeferino used her as an opponent. Their whole promotion is a joke and were literally chased out of Colorado after that debacle.

Heavyweight contender Duncan Dokiwari (25-3, 22 KOs) took the first step towards a return to the world rankings with a fourth round stoppage of Willie Palms (10-5-1, 5 KOs) Friday at the Avi Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada. Dokiwari dropped Palms in rounds two and four before the carnage was halted at 1:39 of the fourth, earning Dokiwari the vacant WBC USNBC heavyweight belt.

Dokiwari could make a good case in the HW divsion if he is serious about training and building up his stamina which was an issue for him before he took time off. He will definitely give some fighters a run for their money.

Hey Shannon Briggs did it. He knocked out 10 straight bums to get a title shot against Liakhovich. Dokiwari has fought three bums and should start taking on some better competition shortly. Personally he needs to get away from Zef Ramirez to really compete against better fighters.

My boss was gracious enough to let me go to the convention center to watch a few of the fights.
Have to say Dokiwari's victory was hardly compelling and the refs call to end the fight in the fourth was somewhat questionable even though it was clear it was quite a mismatch. The only bout which was actually interesting to watch was the 8 rounder with De Leon and Muller which went the full 8 and I found it hard to pick a winner, it could have gone either way. The first 3 fights (can't name a one who fought) were kind of strange since they each featured a southpaw and it had a definite effect on the pacing of the bouts as both boxers awkwardly threw their punches from strange angles. It seemed like none of them could get a rhythm going. Are left handed fighters on the rise? |
