Gammer-Williams (spoilerish)

Danny Williams has become the new British Heavyweight Champion after his ninth round TKO against up and coming Brit HW Scott Gammer. At times in the fight, especially in the eight and ninth rounds, Danny looked like his old self and then at other times he let Gammer outbox him and steal close rounds.

Williams looked in outstanding shape at 228 lbs, the second lowest weight of his career. Danny also hinted at retirement and admitted he had problems lining up his punches the whole fight.

Williams looked in good physical shape as far as his fitness was concerned, but the performance left a lot to be desired. Gammer appeared to be a moderate domestic fighter. Williams was far from impressive. It was a comfortable win, but fell far short of being impressive.

Of note, Williams' fighting weight was the lowest it has been since his debut fight. For the first time in about 4 years he was at a sensible weight, but I fear it was his mental frailty that held him back.

For all those who knock Williams, ultimately I consider him to be a reasonable boxer. Someone who, on his day, was fit, technically sound and brave. It was just unfortunate that that these occurances rarely coincided. The negatives are well known and I will not repeat them.

Williams, at his best, was a genuine Top 20 fighter (albeit at the lower end) and for all his knockers, being at that level is not too slack for any sportsman.

I agree that Williams was far from impressive but he did have his moments, especially towards the end of the fight. For the most part the weight and the soft mentality that Danny posessed really held him back. If he kept in good shape and had focus, he could have been a top 15-20 HW and a force on the Euro scene. Danny is one of the few "good guys" in the sport and I hope he has one more decent run before retiring.

Williams got TKO'd by Harrison, will never take him serious again.

Getting TKO'd by Harrison is not something you want on your ledger but considering he took the fight on short notice and wasn't in good physical shape to begin with, you can seriously question Williams dedication to the sport. If he ever had the drive to train hard enough and maintain the 225-230 lbs range for his whole career, Williams would have been a force in Europe and a quality HW on the world scene.
