Floyd's 154lb title

If Floyd comes back, looks like he'll have to fight the winner of this one eventually if he wants to keep this title. Or Shane if he still wants his WBC belt @ 147. I thought the WBC gave him 30 days to decide which one he wants?

Forrest-Baldomir in Tacoma!
Former world champions and current top rated contenders Vernon Forrest and Carlos Baldomir collide for the WBC interim super welterweight title on July 28. Promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, in association with Brian Halquist Productions, the Forrest-Baldomir title tilt will be broadcast live from the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, on HBO Boxing After Dark. Tickets ($50 to $250) go on sale Monday at 10 AM at the Emerald Queen Casino Box Office and at all TicketMaster outlets.

I seriously cannot see Baldomir/PBF 2 happening or Floyd fighting Forrest. There is no money in it. He'll probably vacate the belt and come out of "retirement" in 08 when lucrative matchups with Hatton or Williams come up.

The 'interim' title, I just love the way belts have totally been reduced to nothing more than scrap metal on a hunk of Leather.........why not just throw in an "over 30" Title, a "less than 15 fights" Title and a "My mother makes the best Chicken soup" Title too..........God our beloved sport needs help.

Wait.....bad idea, that just gives Carlos Maussa three more title shots he doesn't deserve.

SHHHH, Lee don't give them any ideas. Quick edit your post before those belts do appear.

I never used to think this way, but now, in my opinion - the fans and the fighters that make the title.

Most of the people who saw the DeLaHoya, Mayweather fight didn't have a clue what title they were fighting for... or even who the other title holders in the division were.

If you ask someone which version of the Jr. Middleweight belt Floyd Mayweather won, they couldn't tell you whether it was the WBA, WBC, IBF or WBO title. Basically, they were fighting for the "Jr. Middleweight Championship."

On the bright side, back in the day, fighters like Charley Burley could go an entire career without getting a shot at the title, even though he was considered to be one of the best ever in his division. Now, with a half-dozen titles per weight class, that's no longer a problem.

^ Good points Jim. Yeah, it's the fighters that make the title/bout worth watching. The IBO belt on the line tonight isn't why people are tuning in, it's because 2 good fighters are meeting.

I understand what you're saying though Lee. The WBC just wants some money coming in & it might be some time before/if Floyd fights again. If/when he gives up that belt, they can just declare the winner of that fight champ & get more fees coming their way.

IMO only one title matters and that is the ring title. Floyd is ranked third at JMW which is utterly stupid since Spinks and Karmazin are above him. Both would get shut out facing Floyd

I doubt anyone will step up and face Floyd at 154. Granted the huge payday is there but most guys will be gunshy because PBF can be really dominant and make them look foolish. Floyd is better off just moving down to WW and pursuing matchups with Cotto, Williams, Hatton, ect.

It was The Ring Magazine that originally created the ratings/rankings system that we have today. They were the first in a lot of things. They were the first sports publication in the United States, they were the first to create a ratings system in boxing, etc.

They were the first to record the champion "lineage", too.

They have a panel of boxing writers, etc. who cast ballots and from there, the rankings are created.

Question

Floyd to keep welter belt!
WBC welterweight and super welterweight world champion Floyd Mayweather has informed the World Boxing Council that he has decided maintain his welterweight championship and relinguish the superwelter belt he won against Oscar De La Hoya. The WBC has announced that the 154lb title is now vacant with contenders to be announced after a vote in the coming days.

Wonder why they have to vote on this? I thought Vernon was fighting Carlos for the interim belt on the 28th. If that's the case, why doesn't that fight determine their new champ @ 154?

Simple, they can have Vernon and Carlos fight for the interim title then have two other guys fight for the real belt then make whoever wins that fight fight the winner of Vernon/Carlos for the belt. That way they get three title fights worth of fees instead of only one.

That is the one thing that annoys me about the sanctioning bodies. It's never about the fights anymore. They are just concerned with how much money they can make by having an interim, a real champ, and a super champion. No wonder why potential boxing fans can't get interested in the sport anymore. It's just too confusing to follow who has what belt/title.
