Holyfield PPV

Hey guys what do think of this fight card for 29.95? I know the main fighters butwhat does the undercard look like to you experts.

My honest opinion.....it's not worth it. The undercard has two HW undefeated crossroad prospects fighting, Rick Dyer and David Rodriguez. Dyer has faced nothing but stiffs in Arkansas and he weighs nearly 300 lbs. Rodriguez has fought for nearly ten years with a few name journeymen in the win column such as Stacy Goodson, Marcus Rhode, Travis Fulton, Jeff Lally, and Tommy Connelly. Neither one looks special. The rest of the card is filled with unrecognizable names.

Thumbs down

I find it hard to believe that there is a commission out there that would sanction
a fight between these two gentlemen, Holyfield is far to old, and Savarese was
never much to begin with.

Greg
The boxing commission in Texas is not much to begin with anyway. In the last year they have sanctioned four bouts for Holyfield and his fight with Jeremy Bates should have never been allowed (very questionable if Bates should be sanctioned by any commission). On the flipside they sanctioned a bout for Savarese against Matt Hicks (another bad call considering Hicks has been in the ring with no one remotely close to the caliber of Savarese). Fans and experts always complain how mismatches ruin the sport but it's up to the boxing commissions to evaluate these matchups and determine if overmatched fighters should be in the ring with nearly world class caliber opposition. I'm not saying Holyfield and Savarese are world class at this stage of their careers but their experience outweighs what Bates and Hicks have faced during their careers.

I wouldn't get this fight even if I was home - I'll be out watching Mike's girl Eitnya that night instead anyway.

For Holyfield's age and where he is at.....Reality is he looked damn decent tonight.

Fought a decent paced 10 round fight.....Threw some good combinations....Dropped Lou a few times (huge left hook in the 9th....Lou doesn't beat that one out if it wasn't at the end of the round....Perfect right hand to the body ...left hook to the chin by Holy).

Granted, we all know Holy is half the fighter he once was.....But I'll give him his due......He looked decent tonight in a full 10 round fight.

The best he has looked out of his last 4.

I went to the fights, live, at the Don Haskins Center here in El Paso.

Altogether, it was a very fun evening. I had seats on the first row of the stands: close enough for a good view, far enough back and high enough not to have my view blocked by people on the floor. The Don is a first-class venue, and it was an El Paso family-type crowd (the atmosphere was a little like that at a minor-league baseball game). I'd say at least 5,000 were in attendance, and the concessions sold lots of beer, pepsis for the kids, popcorn, burritos, etc. It all smelled good (I'm on a low-fat, no-salt-added diet at the moment, so I had a sandwich at home before I left).

The undercard had some mismatches, but those ended in exciting knockouts, and all the boxers came to fight (plenty of action).

How was the Holyfield/Savarese fight? I was surprised at how good Evander looked--there were flashes of his old brilliance, he worked more of each round than I expected, and he was moving pretty constantly. I was also surprised that Savarese was able to hurt Evander a bit, early (Holyfield admitted this in an interview with the El Paso Times published this morning)--and also at what a gutsy performance Lou gave in a losing cause. I really didn't think he'd get up after the knockdown at the end of the ninth, and it looked like his corner was thinking about not having him come out for the tenth. But he did, and he managed to stay on his feet for the final bell. The fans loved the fight!

All in all, a very entertaining evening and money ($ 100 per ticket for me) well spent.

It was OK, saw your girl but she wasn't on a great deal. It was a 2 hour show & seemed to focus on Joey McIntyre, Joey Lawrence & Drew Lachey.

Joey McI seems to think he's some sort of comedian now.

The best part was the 2nd half of the show with Apollo & Julianne performing one of their best #'s & Drew & Cheryl doing their season 2 winning cowboy routine - that act drew the biggest cheers.

They also had 4 local couples dance to determine a "champ". The 1st 3 couples were all from Sanford & the 4th was from Raleigh so then Drew said "Go Wolfpack". That 1st drew cheers but then boos from the classless Tar Heel fans.

I'm looking forward to seeing that fight now based on what I've read on ESPN Classic next Sat. night @ 8pm. I recall Toney beat up Evander but if they fought now (years later) I think Evander would beat Toney. Looks like it was a shoulder problem for Evander in that fight more than him being past him prime.

Holyfield had terrible shoulder problems Vs Toney & Byrd. Reports were he could hardly get through 4 rounds of sparring going into those fights. Made absolutely no sense in taking them....Other then his incredible (if at times very foolish) belief in himself that come "fight night" he'd rise up and be okay...

Finally having his second rotary cuff surgery (along with scoping surgery on both shoulders) has certainly helped him come back to be better then his body was allowing him to be in those fights mentioned above...

But even with that....the reality is he is well past his best days. His chin, stamina, power, nor reflexes are even 70% of what they once were......Though he still has tons of heart, ring smarts, willing to take risks to get his punches off....and more defensive ring savy then given credit for...

It was a pretty fun fight. One of the fun things about watching older boxers is that since they no longer are always fast enough to get out of the way of a punch but still have more or less the same strength they did when they were younger, you get to see some monster hits. Holyfield looked like... well, better than Foreman when he fought Foreman, although not anywhere near Holyfield himself in the 80s to the mid-90s. He's at an age where that instinct to slug it out rather than back away when he's hurt is going to cause a nasty KO sooner or later, but vs. Savarese he looked like a contender to me.
