Who's Next for Wlad?
Just read this online...
2004 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Alexander Povetkin is just two wins away from challenging world champion Wladimir Klitschko after the IBF has launched an elimination tournament to determine the Ukrainianīs next mandatory challenger. The 2004 Olympic gold medal winner, unbeaten in 13 professional bouts, joins fourth-ranked Calvin Brock, former champion Chris Byrd (5) and Eddie Chambers (10) in the competition. Povetkin (11) will be in for a meeting with Byrd, while Brock comes face-to-face with Chambers. The two winners will then fight for the right to challenge Klitschko. What a joke... There is no way that Byrd or Brock should ever be allowed to occupy the same time-zone as Wlad ever again. If either one ever gets another title shot, it would be yet another disgrace for boxing. It would be nice to see "Fast" Eddie Chambers get a shot. Potvetkin is only 13-0 (9) and even though he beat a washed-up Larry Donald, he's way too raw to be sent in against Wlad.

At least Brock took the fight to Wlad much better than either Brewster or Austin did. Brock did some nice things in the middle rounds. It seems a bit too easy to say the winner of that will face Wlad. Brock/Chambers could end in a draw due to Brock's size. I think Chambers has better skills. I don't give Byrd much of a shot. That fight will end the same way his fight with Ike did about ten years ago. I would rather see Tony Thompson in there for Byrd. Wlad has already beaten him (Byrd) to a pulp twice.

I agree it's too soon for Povetkin to be in the same ring as Wlad but he would beat Byrd, Brock, and Chambers. With the exception of "Fast Eddie", the rest of the U.S. heavyweight picture is very bleak. I would count on another heavyweight world champion from this country for a long, long time.
Eastern European heavyweights are far more advanced in terms of skill and fighting ability and when a guy like Povetkin is possibly in line for a title shot after fifteen fights, it shows what kind of talent could still being lying in wait in the former Soviet block. |

Based on the current heavyweight landscape, I like Wlad's chances of a long and prosperous reign as world champion. This tournament should be called what it actually is; fighting for the right to get the crap beat out of you by Wlad. Agree that Tony Thompson should be in the mix instead of Byrd. However, he wouldn't stand much of a chance, either, IMO.

I think they may be rushing Povetikin a bit. He is definitely a future world champion, and I would place him as the odds on favorite to win the so called "tournament." But, why throw him in there with the likes of Wlad so early in his career? I would give him at least four or five more fights against increasingly better competition, and maybe even challenge one of the lesser beltholders first. No use in potentially shattering the confidence of such a talented young fighter. Just my 2 cents.
