I may not know much about MMA but shouldn't you have something in mind that you are going to do if you are rushing your opponent? Anything really; a punch, a kick, a shoulder down, something. Anything other than hands at your side would likely do.

It looked like he might have been going for a flying knee but he waited to long to throw it.

This is one of the many reasons I prefer boxing to MMA. I wrestled in high school and as such am relatively well-acquainted with the holds used, but IMO the fact that you can't do that stuff opens up more strategies. The "fly at your opponent" tactic utilized in the video wouldn't fly, of course, because you wouldn't be able to do anything at the end of said flight except pick yourself up and fly at your opponent again. We do, of course, see the results of what happens when a fighter tries to go inside on a guy with a good jab.
I'll go so far as to say that at this point I don't think any MMA guy would stand a chance against a world-class boxer of the same weight class. The only way the MMA guy would be able to win is if he grabbed the boxer and a good boxer knows how to evade guys who train themselves to get inside of a boxer's wingspan. Going against a guy who hasn't trained his entire life to do that, using lighter gloves that may do some damage to your hands but will most certainly do more damage to the other guy's face, and having that ingrained muscle memory of how to throw a proper punch in any situation that only comes with years of boxing training means that IMO any MMA fight would end up looking like Klitschko/Brewster II at best and a severe mauling at worst. |
