Ray Mercer fights again

Mercer replaces Seldon!
Monday, July 30 2007
By Teddy Stenmark
It was announced today by Pugnus Promotions that former WBA champion Bruce Seldon for various reasons has dropped the idea of coming to Karlstad, Sweden on September 15th to box against local heavyweight favorite Mikael Lindblad. Seldon, has been replaced by former WBO champion and Olympic gold medalist Ray Mercer. Mercer vs Lindblad is now the main event at the Löfbergs Lila Arena in September.

...

46-year old Mercer hasn't fought since August 2005 (KO'd in 7 by Shannon Briggs) 37-year old Linblad is fighting for the 3rd time in 2007 after a 5 year layoff. He fought once in 2002 and had a 4 year layoff before that.

I've always been a Mercer fan, but other than for a few $$$, there really isn't any reason for him to return to the ring at age 46.

Even thought I think Mercer should not be allowed anywhere near a ring anymore (unless Mercer is working someone's corner), he should be able to beat Lindblad.

Mercer to fight in Sweden?

Didn't see Dave's thread when I started mine. I agree with the above post though.

Hmm. I don't know much about him. He hits pretty hard, thats really all I can say about him.

He is a former Swedish HW champion. 60-65 amateur fights before he turned pro. He hasn't fought much the last 5-10 years but he is always in pretty good shape as he trains a lot.

If Mercer can find some of the past form it shouldn't be too hard for him to beat Lindblad. But as I said he packs a pretty good punch and if Mercer doesn't do better than his last ventures into K1 and MMA I can se Lindblad taking it.

Mercer might be way past his prime but if he can survive the early bombs from Lindblad and show some of the skills he had in the past, Mercer should win a decision.

I know of another Swedish heavyweight named Aldo Collander who is fighting later this fall. Not sure how good he is, either.

I think Mercer will win.

Aldo is much better imo. I think that he has/did have good potential to be among the top european heavies. He is cocky though and his attitude makes it hard for me to like him. When he lost to Taras Bidenko he gave a really demented interview after the fight. He told the reporter that everyone knows that fighters from universum use steroids and went on ranting.

I hope so too. Had it been a boxing match though, Mercer would have killed Kimbo imo.

What I meant by "Euro level HW" was the fact that he'll only be able to compete on that stage. I'm a big fan of Chagaev, Povetkin, and a few other German based heavyweights who are better than anything the US has been churning out so I don't discriminate

I remember him flipping out after losing to Bidenko and making those harsh comments about Universum. Collander seems like he has the talent to be a good heavyweight but he didn't turn pro right away and that might have hurt his chances to make noise in the division.

I think Bidenko is a good Euro level heavyweight. Not sure if he has the talent to compete with the big boys but he can punch. Just ask Nikolay Valuev.

He spoke about Universum in swedish newspaper "Aftonbladet" also. He said that he saw a lot of steroid use when he served as a sparring partner for a lot of universum boxers over two years . He accused Universum of systematically doping their boxers with illegal drugs. He said that one of the main reasons why the Klitschko brothers went to the U.S to fight was that they didn't want to have anything with Universum's "steroid policy" anymore (Colliander also claimed that the Klitschkos were juiced up big time).

He also claimed that he has been offered a contract with universum many times but that he denied them all due to the fact that they treat their boxers like live stock and slaves.

At least Colliander isn't afraid to speak his mind.

I read the same thing in a few online english newspapers. I'm not sure how truthful Collander's clams are because there really hasn't been anyone else to come forward to support those accusations about Universum. If there is, I would love to read those articles.

Sounds sort of like sour grapes to me. Collander loses to a guy from Universum Gym so he accuses them all of steriod use ????

Obviously I know nothing about the situation but sounds like sour grapes to me.
