Excellent find, as I have always been a fan of boxing history more than some of the current fighters that are on the seen today.

This is an awesome site. I love goofy 19th century pictures of sports. Baseball, boxing, the French martial art savate, I don't care... it's like they were competing in different sports - no, wait, same sports, just different laws of physics. Did old-timey boxers really get into stances that involved resting their left hands three inches from the other guy's face? Was this a bare-knuckle thing? And don't get me started on the superhero pants.
Baseball in some ways is even worse since they actually posed players for photographs whereas most of the boxing pics I've seen are woodcuts or lithographs. Photos are worse because at the time it took several seconds for a camera to take a proper picture so you had to have your subject freeze in place even in action shots. There's a picture floating around of John Clarkson where he's supposed to be throwing a pitch but is actually having a possibly very smelly jeweler appraise a baseball from 20 feet away. But back to boxing... I submit the following: http://bp0.blogger.com/_xPO_vST6aB4/...aher-punch.jpg What is he doing here? Yes, I know that the accompanying story describes a strong punch to the solar plexus, but I think the story is lying. Is he rubbing lotion on the other man's belly, preparing him for an ultrasound? Does this mean the guy in the short shorts have a "bun in the oven"? And why is the guy in the upper left-hand corner, who clearly is not either one of these men, looking in the other direction. Wait. If this is what I think it is, I think I'd probably be looking away too. |

I bought a few copies from the site a couple of weeks back.
The guy who runs it seems like a good bloke and I pointed him in our direction. Hopefully we can get him involved in the sim. It would be good to get some more knowledge on the board for that era. By the way, the copies are very well presented and he takes a lot of time and effort as his website suggests. |
