Ponce DeLeon big Ko - Penalosa big upset -

Ponce DeLeon scored a huge 1st Rd KO over undefeated Pilipino bomber "Boom Boom" Bautista ......

And ex-JBW title holder G. Penalosa scored a big upset KO over BW champion and highly favored J. Gonzalez - Gonzalez was winning on all cards and then Ko'd by a perfect counter "body shot" to the liver.....

A Ponce DeLeon Vs Vasquez to unify the JFW division would be another absolute war (a la, Marquez Vs Vasquez)........Ditto that somewhat if DeLeon faces Marquez.....Though, without question Marquez could simply outbox him for 7 or 8 rounds until looking to take him out....

DeLeon is still very rough & raw looking at times......but he can bang and would certainly stand and trade with Vasquez...

Perfect liver shot by Penalosa ... lucky because he was getting schooled by a drained fighter. Gonzalez needs to skip Super Bantamweight and go right to FW.

DeLeon just bumrushed Bautista. Deleon vs. Vasquez would be a great fight. I'd like to see him get another shot at Caballero first though.

Gonzalez did not impress me - he had a nice reach advantage and moved away from Penalosa well enough but he just wasn't busy enough for me. Glad he got the liver shot as I was bored.

Bautista was like a deer in headlights. I've never seen him fight before but at only 20/21 perhaps he'll be back. Seems he might need more experience.

I've seen Bautista fight a couple of times and he looked better than that.

Bautista had no buisness facing Ponce DeLeon this early in his career. He had a good showing against Sergio Manuel Medina but Bautista still needed more seasoning before stepping up to face a world class fighter.

Penalosa KO'ed a fighter in J. Gonzalez that burnt himself out just to make the BW limit but that was a great counter to the body. Maybe better than the shot that Hatton landed to stop Castillo.

Gonzalez and DeLeon should make for some great fights against any of the top JFW's.

Hell of a body shot by Penalosa... Secondly there is only one Boom Boom and it isn't Bautista. He was definately overwhelmed can't believe he got hit with some of those punches Ponce De Leon was swinging from right field with some of those shots

Bautista was rushed into this fight too quickly...in rethrospect (obviously). His chin has always been a question mark...and his team just rolled the dice hoping their guy would land first....(though Ponce has always shown a decent chin to date).

Ponce DeLeon can still be certainly outboxed....but he does have power and swings for the fences I'll give him that.....He also had the exact right game plan for a new guy like Bautista ....Come right at him and put pressure on...

Not sure where Penalosa goes from here - Hell of a win for himself, great for his legacy looking back.....He's always been a fine fighter, was very solid at JBW....just lost a couple close decisions to better pure boxers.......I doubt he'll fare as well in a return match up at JFW Vs DeLeon.....If I were him I'd defend his newly won WBO belt at BW instead.....

Bautista doesn't have a chin of iron but him being set up for failure against Ponce DeLeon in a fight he had a very slim chance of winning shows his team had very little faith in him for the future and was looking for a quick cashout against a title holder.

Hopefully Bautista has learned something from this and improves because he does have the talent to be a good fighter.

Penalosa should just stay at BW and see if he can make a couple of defenses of his WBO title. From what i've heard, he's looking to take one or two more "money" fights before retiring.

Wink

Ponce De Leon looked impressive against a clearly overmatched fighter in
Bautista, and the deer in the headlights comment was spot on. Sorry I missed
the rest of the card as I was just returning from hospital after undergoing emergency surgery the previous day. Perhaps Bautista was rushed by management, because I would hate to think this was Freddie Roach's doing.

Just watched this fight again......I will say Bautista slightly rocks Ponce with his own right hand at about 1:30 of the round......Nice shot.....

Also to Bautista defense....Ponce caught him with a great straight left hand....not sure how many at JFW would have weathered that shot....

It was an exciting fight while it lasted....give it that...

I went back and watched again when you said this (I had it ready to go to show my kid so I know 4 minutes is quick LOL) and you are 100% correct he did hurt Ponce at the 1:30 mark. Good call.
