Haye v Mormick (spoiler)

A 7th round TKO for Haye to take him to 20 - 1.

A nice match with 2 talented boxers, albeit at opposite ends of their careers. Haye showed a good deal of talent and charismatic boxing. Overall, as a natural heavyweight, Haye had too much for Mormeck at this stage of his career.

However, Haye continually carried his left hand by his side and was picked off almost at will. Against a heavyweight, or just a bigger puncher, he would have been in a great deal more trouble. Haye was actually knocked down in the 4th. He was hit by a couple of big shots and may have gone down, but he then slipped and had no chance of staying up.

Ultimately, it was a good performance from Haye. He will be stepping up to heavyweight sooner or later, but really needs to sort his defence out before he does otherwise he will get hurt. He's young, articulate and charismatic and could be what the world heavyweight scene needs.

What a great fight! I was listening to it on BBC radio and Haye just had too much skill and punching power for the aging Mormeck.

I do agree that Haye needs to work on his defense before making the leap to the HW division. He defintely has the skills and charisma to be a big star and would be a perfect fit for the HW version of "The Contender".

A good win for Haye to anex the WBA/WBC cruiser titles. Post fight stated it's his last outing at cruiser as he can no longer make the weight but said he would fight Enzo Maccarenelli at heavy. Maccarenelli, a natural cruiser, has said that it won't happen, he won't give away any weight.
Good times for British boxing. Now all we need is a Hatton win.

Good win for Haye. Time will tell if he has the same "pop" as a heavyweight. Am cautiously optimistic, and do agree that his defense needs some work. Top big men like Wlad hit very hard, and if Mormeck was able to knock David down, it would be in Haye's best interest not to get nailed by too many shots from guys like Klitschko.

Mormeck chin just not enough Vs big punchers.....

Hayes......Exciting guy....But I don't see him winning a major belt at HW. His chin and lack of defense will cost him. Mormeck beat him on the inside.....and I'd give a younger Mormeck a good shot at beating Hayes....(though Hayes would always have the KO factor Vs him).

A younger Mormeck might have been able to keep the pressure on though?

I think Haye could win a title at HW if he shores up his defense. His chin might not be the greatest but there are ways to disguise that if he refines the technical aspects of his game.

His fight against Carl Thompson can be thrown out because he was relatively inexperienced then and didn't know how to pace himself.

It wasn't Haye's greatest performance but it was pretty good.

Good job by Haye .. wifey is happy because she thinks he is dreamy ... I still say he will be the best of any current English HW's. I think he can beat Iggy with no problems. His power and Ruslan's lack of power makes me think he would be favored there. Peter would KO him as would Wlad.

I agree Mike. Any HW with elite power will KO Haye but guys like Iggy and Chagaev are tailor made for him.

I wonder how much making CW bothers his chin ... Cotto's chin seems much better at WW than it was at JWW.

Haye has had difficulties making the CW limit for quite some time. When he fought the HW experiment fight against Tomasz Bonin, he weighed 217 and he looked great. He has hinted that he plans to move up to 225-230, which would be a sensible weight for him against the big boys.
