Weekend Fights (spoiler)
The HW's on Showtime Friday night were brutal. Joey Abell and Teke Oruh would have both lost to Arreola on the same night.
Andre Ward looked improved. Last night .... Joan Guzman's performance was impressive. Way too fast for Soto. What about the 18lbs overnight though? Abner Mares looks like the real thing. I'm not sure if he doesn't have the power or if the comparison of Marchiano to McCullough was legit. Either way I think Mares looks to have a bright future. |

I hadn't followed any of the Arreola news, and Comcast still had his name in the program description, so I was a little disappointed to learn he wasn't there. Maybe I would have stayed awake for the whole show if he was there. 18 lbs? Isn't there some rule about that?

J. Guzman clearly has speed to burn.......But as I've said since he was at 122.....He's power is vastly overrated........The fight (Vs Soto) was also somewhat closer than the judges had it....
Surprising that Guzman could put on that much weight (18 pounds) over night and still keep his speed to that level...... |

Mares is going to be a huge star at BW. He's very polished for someone who is going to be turning twenty-two in a few weeks. Marchiano is a tough dude but he is nothing more than a glorified Argentinian clubfighter who happened to get a shot at a minor alphabet soup title.
Guzman reminds me a little bit of Mayweather with his fast hands and great defense. His power is definitely overrated but he's going to be a beast at 130. Guzman was just too fast and elusive for Soto last night and i'm not sure Pacquiao would be able to beat him. Andre Ward looked like he has improved greatly since his last televised fight but Cantrell was just a quazi-prospect with......you guessed it....a padded record. Can't really read anything in those type of fights especially if the opponent isn't really putting up much resistance. I don't want to see Abell or Oruh ever again. One time was enough for me. |

Ward looked fine... but I'm not sure which weight class he can make a mark in. Mares is pretty good fighting with a broken nose for 10 rounds. Marchiano is one tough dude. He should probably retire now since it can't get any better for him.

Ward should stay at SMW for the time being but his best chance to make a splash will probably be at LHW/CW. Marchiano's fighting style will have him in retirement before thirty. The punishment he took against Mares was pretty brutal. |
