Oleydong upsets Eagle (Kyowa) for Strawweight title
Oleydong Sithsamerchai 25-0-0 (9) Upset highly considered Champion Eagle Kyowa (Den Janlaphan) 18-2-0 - via close UD earlier today in Thailand......
Champion Ealge looked flat...and seemed to constantly be looking for the KO.....while challenger Oleydong backpeddled and counter punched the entire 12 rounds......Eagle pressed the fight.....but didn't put his punches together in his typical combination fashion.....seemingly looking to score a KO...... I had the fight very close...... Give credit to Oleydong for fighting his type fight......but damn did Eagle look flat..... ___________________ BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's Oledong Sithsanerchai pulled off a shock points victory over compatriot Eagle Den Janlapan to win the WBC strawweight title on Thursday. The eagerly awaited bout was the first all-Thai world title fight and drew a huge crowd, which backed Oledong all the way over Japan-based Den. Oledong, the 17-times undefeated WBC youth champion, had the edge in a close and entertaining contest to deny Den (18-2-1) a victory in his sixth successive defense of the title. The judges gave Oledong the advantage at 114-115, 112-117, 113-115, which improved his record to 25-0. ___________________ It was Eagle who entered the ring heavily favoured to retain his title and on two judges scorecards he won the first round, while Brian McMohan of Australia scored it as a 10-10 tie. But later, Oledong got into his stride, using his magnificent footwork and started to bob and weave, making Eagle miss many punches. Eagle was smiling during the first four rounds as Oledong danced and moved out of trouble and threw some well-timed left jabs and hooks and mixed it up with some good combinations. But Oledong won both the second and third rounds on all three judges scorecards. In the fourth, Eagle tried hard to make a comeback. The smile vanished as he tried hard to take control of the contest. But Oledong bounced back with changed tactics and moving fast on his feet, he threw some tidy, accurate punches. With brilliant bobbing and weaving. Oledong won the next three rounds comfortably. From the eighth stanza, Eagle tried in desperation to corner Oledong, but the young Thai, moved beautifully out of trouble. Though Australia's McMohan scored the next three rounds in favour of Eagle the other two judges differed. Gerald Ritter gave two rounds to the champion and Ferdinan Esrtrella gave them to Oledong. The eleventh and 12th rounds were shared by the two protagonists and in the end Brian McMohan of Australia had Oledong win 115-114, Gerald Ritter of the US picked Oledong 115-113 and Ferdinan Estrella of the Philippines picked Oledong victor by 117-112. I knew there would be an upset in this fight but everyone was saying Eagle Den Jalaphan (Kyowa) would dominate. Oleydong Sithsamerchai is the real deal. Seen him fight an number of times and is a slick boxer who would give anyone trouble. I think he could beat Niida and Condes as well.
Eagle will probably head up to JFLY or FLY now. His issues making weight were evident in this fight. |

I've seen Ealge's camp has said there will be a rematch......so we'll likely see that. I think Eagle got way to caught up in all the hype of his lack of KO's (for being a guy who is physically much stronger than his opponents).....He was simply looking for the KO the entire fight.....not using his speed and combination punching to cut off the ring on Oleydong. Oleydong is certainly a Top 10 SW.......A rematch will be fun to watch..... |

I'm looking forward to a rematch as well but my biggest concern is can Eagle still make weight without him having any physical issues? He just looked so lethargic the entire fight and was looking for the one big shot to bail him out. Eagle is at his best when he throws combinations and uses his speed to keep opponents off balance.
Meade.......how do you think Oleydong would fare against Niida and Condes? I think he could outbox them but i'm curious about your thoughts about those potential fights. Last edited by a87star : 11-29-2007 at 04:43 PM. |

I'd might make Niida a slight favorite......just based on his experience (at this time). Then again, Oleydong just managed to the beat the best Strawweight out there in Eagle (it was him or Calderon)..... |

How were you able to watch it.
I'm thinking of getting the PPV from New Mexico this weekend. Meade ... do you know anything about this Juan Esquer who is fighting Calderon Saturday night? Last edited by mh2365 : 11-29-2007 at 06:51 PM. |

Eagle just looked flat today.....Constantly looking for the KO...which isn't his game.....(but still, it was a close fight......I'd bet the farm on Eagle in a rematch). With that said....Oleydong without a doubt gave Eagle problems....and one would have to say at this time now....that Calderon should be the favorite if those two ever meet...(or if they had met at SW).......Though I believe Eagle would have fought a much different fight Vs Calderon (with much more respect toward him). As for Juan Esquer.......He is young (only 21 or 22) and raw at this point. He was beaten soundly by another limited fighter Manuel Vargas earlier this year (07).....He'll have a 4 inch height advantage over Calderon.......but he likely won't pose much of a threat to Calderon.... |

Speaking of the Top Rank card on Saturday.......I see Jore Arce is in the main event. Meade.....would happen to know anything about his opponent, Medgoen Singsurat. I looked up his record and saw that he beat Manny Pacquiao back in 1999 and hasn't done much since.

He has a decent punch (himself)....but lacks any head movement and has poor defense.......made to order for Arce in that regard........Will likely be an entertaining but short (inside of 6 rds) fight with Arce.... |

Rematch between Eagle and Oleydong is basically set - Oleydong will make one (easier type) defense in Thailand early next year.....and then they will have a rematch...... Likely April (ish).
Eagle will be favored in the rematch......He fought a silly (try to KO'em) fight plan for the first 6 rounds....and still only lost a very close decision.... (it was a 1 or 2 pt fight...either way). |

I'm struggling with it because Arce is always action packed .. I know Calderon will be a snoozefest ... I enjoy watching the progress of Chavez Jr. So there are a lot of pluses to it. If it were 24.95 instead of 34.95 I would have already ordered it.

I like Arce a lot....so his fight Vs Singsurat will be exciting (while it lasts, Singsurat will stand and trade with him....no doubt about that.....but Singsurat chin is very so, so). I agree about Calderon......and the Chavez Jr. fight has some interesting aspects to it...... But yeah, $19.99 or around there makes much more sense to me... |
