Arreola/Barrett (2/2/08)

I just read this on ESB. Nice step-up fight for Arreola and he should be able to stop Barrett in the middle rounds.

It doesn't surprise me that Tua turned down this fight. I guess he's content with fighting journeymen and stiffs and then cashing out (a la Shannon Briggs).

Tua's reasoning is pretty self explanitory but Brock probably didn't want to be known as the guy who lost back to back fights against highly regarded prospects.

Is Brock still a viable property? My muddy general impression of him is a guy who's just hanging around to make a few bucks.

I don't think he is which is probably why he didn't take this fight. After losing to Chambers he is pretty much just a gatekeeper now much the same way Barrett used to be.

Brock is probably on the same level as Dominick Guinn. Not good enough to beat the upper level HW's but enough of a threat to give any up and coming/prospect types a lot of trouble.

Barrett is still good enough defensively to give anyone trouble as long as they aren't 7'1". I'll root for Barrett because he is from NY. I think he has a decent chance at winning.

After Brock's performance in his last bout, I don't think he really wants to box anylonger but the money is too good at HW for him to step away. It appears that he/they don't want to take any risks after the Chambers loss.

Arreola is still lousy defensively and will get exposed eventually. He does have a crowd pleasing style that will make him some $ in the future but I don't think much of him. The only upper tier heavys I give him a shot against are Peter and Sergie. Peter is technically awful and fairly easy to hit and Sergie doesn't handle pressure well. If Arreola's handlers are smart, that is where they will steer him. Ruiz might be a decent way to go as well since he is old and is pretty much of a plodder these days.

Just the fact that you think a shot Monte Barrett stands a chance against Arreola shows a bias ... I get it, there are boxers I don't like either.

2gunz is always dependable for a strong stare-down, which is important for me personally, I love the stare-down!

PS Otherwise hes a bust whos wasted numerous golden opportunities.

Even thought Barrett never lived up to the hype that was placed upon him.....he's been a top 15 HW for close to a decade and always shows class in victory or defeat.

I'm just glad to see Barrett get one more big fight before he retires. More than likely Arreola will beat him but he has always shown heart and courage no matter who his opponent was.

I'd agree but if Arreola can't catch him I don't see him winning a decision. That said, I think he'll tag Barrett more often than he'll need to.

That sounds about right. My prediction is Arreola TKO5 but it wouldn't surprise me if Barrett took the fight into "deeper waters".

Barrett is three years removed from any significant win. Arreola will win and then everyone will say he beat a shot fighter ... they won't be wrong.

When they publish a boxing dictionary, Barrett's picture will be on the gatekeeper page. He probably doesn't have much left, but I hope he can still fulfill his designated role.

I agree Barrett is shot and hasn't had a significant win in quite some time but if you look back at who he faced in his career......it still would be a very good win for Arreola. It would probably line him up for an eliminator or a title shot before the end of '08.

IMO it would have been like Solis putting Botha on his resume ... everyone knows it wouldn't be that good of a win ... just a good name to have on their resume.

It's nice to see Barrett reversed the loss to Cliff Couser but Couser is someone a prime Barrett never loses to.

Now this fight is off too. If Arreola is such a crappy one dimensional fighter with no defense .... why doesn't anyone want to fight him?

Arreola punches like a mule. That would be enough for most HW gatekeepers to avoid him and considering he's one of the top prospects in the division.....it's a no win situation for Barrett at this stage in his career.

Maybe joining the HW season of the "The Contender" wouldn't be a bad idea. It would force other prospects and veterans looking for one more chance to fight Arreola.
