Yo-Sam Choi

Today Yo-Sam Choi defended his WBO Intercontinental FLY title against Heri Amol.

But that isn't the story. Choi was heading to a comfortable points win but late in the fight, Heri Amol landed a punch and knocked him down. He was able to beat the count but right as the final bell sounded, Choi collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. He had surgery to reduce swelling on the brain and the surgeon that performed the procedure said he will recover but Choi's boxing career is over.

I send my prayers to Choi and his family. Hopefully he will recover and lead a productive life outside the ring.

The crazy thing is.....Choi was in control of the fight. It wasn't like he was getting his head beat in. Usually a brain injury occurs after excessive trauma in a short amount of time. It was that one punch by Amol with five to ten seconds left in the fight that caused the injury.

Everyone has a different threshold when it comes to taking punches. Some boxers (George Foreman) can take punches for years with no damage but other suffer brain injuries similar to the above fighter or worse early in their careers.

One obvious one that comes to mind is Wilfred Benitez who during the majority of his carreer was extremely difficult to hit, and he had a few to many fights, and sadly has suffered from dementia for years.

That's really sad. The doctor who did the surgery said Choi would recover but would be in a vegitative state. I'm just curious what boxing will do for his family.

Sad to see the boxer die. I believe last year only 4 pro boxers died as a result of their ring warfare. I got that stat from boxrec where they list boxers that died during the previous year.
