Possible Bright Side
If some secret boxing fan at one of the networks has his brain functioning, he may notice that this writers' strike might be the perfect time to broadcast live boxing.....I think I better have the doc check my meds. That was almost a lucid statement.
Also in the news....if you watch tv on an antennae, you won't be able to as of February 18, 2009, unless you fork over for some kind of crazy magic box that captures the invisible pictures in the sky and carries them through your radiovisionscope. Wow! Boxing on network televideo. Where'd that one come from? Cap

Too bad. I wonder if any US promoter has approached one of them about putting on a card in prime time or Saturday afternoon. Unfortunate that so much of the weekend is already scheduled with football, basketball, figure skating, car racing, etc. Not too many open slots for boxing. And no way I'm forking over more money for TV specialty channels. My TV and Internet service is already costing me more than a hundred bucks a month.

If the strike lasts long enough I wouldn't be shocked to see some boxing end up on one of the networks. Once the NFL playoffs end and the networks have run out of new episodes the networks will be scrambling to find content to fill time no way CBS or something doesn't jump on a chance to air a few fights. Boxing has had two excellent years back to back so the networks know fights will pull in numbers.

Calvin Brock-Terry Smith was on NBC in June, 2004. I believe it was part of a three-card package that summer. It may also have been the last time boxing was on "free TV" in the USA.
The idea that the networks know they would draw big numbers by televising boxing or would make a lot of money is false. If it were true, they would have capitalized on the "success" of '04 by now. I think a network would have to be willing to not make money (or less than it could make with other programming) for a time in the hopes of gaining a reputation and making the dough down the road. Networks rarely take those kind of chances.

I wouldn't expect them to establish a regular boxing programme, but you'd think they'd stage a few events at least.
But the problem is Boxing's shaky image with the public and members of the media. It's seen as a brutal activity populated by shady characters. Ring tragedies and crooked decisions don't help. Cap

I would love to see it, but I would be cold and blue for a long time if I held my breath waiting.
No major promoter will get invloved because they don't need it. Not when they can run one PPV card and gross tens of millions. Boxing is so disoranized, no one is going to step up for little immediate financial gain (even if it could mean long-term success) to make this happen.

As for the strike, it isn't ending anytime soon. The writers were right to strike, but they asked for some of the dumbest things I have ever heard of. They want royalties before a studio even makes back their investment in a movie and they are pushing to get reality/game show writers included. They also want a flat amount on internet content. A flat amount on something that is unstable in returns makes no sense. If you are going to strike, you had better have a decent plan that makes sense. It will just go on and on for now. For those of you waiting for all the shows to burn off and for us to end up having to beg for them to bring in boxing, , you can see the amount of episodes left at The Futon Critic:Episodes Left |
