Bute Overrated?

Just watched Lucian Bute completely outbox and stop an obviously shot William Joppy. Joppy had nothing left at all. Joppy went down from exhaustion at the end of the ninth. In the tenth Joppy took a knee, then backed into a corner and took a few good shots before the ref stopped it. It was just a sparring session for Bute.

As for Calzaghe and Kessler, he'd better wait for them to retire.

Do you mean overrated by the media or in the game? He's a 7 in TB so that seems about right for now.

By the media. You'd have to see him up against some real competition to see if he's overrated in the game. He looked like Klitschko against Ibragimov in there. He had 5 inches in height on Joppy and likely at least several pounds too. Every round looked the same until the 9th. He's now 22-0 against moderate opposition. Like to see him in against someone from the top ten like Andrade or Miranda.

To think back ... anyone remember like 57 years ago how much crap Taylor got for beating up on the small and old Joppy ... now here were are 84 years later and a SMW is beating up on Joppy ... where is the outcry????

Thumbs down

Well let me start the outcry, I could not believe it when I heard Bute was going to fight Joppy, and as much as I would like to see him suceed he has to beat someone with some pedigree because this proves nothing.

Bute is young and Joppy is well known. Fair enough i'd say.

Lucian Bute is for not overrated at all, he has a tremendous boxer/puncher style and seems able to drive fighters into the ropes. Look at him in the later rounds vs Sakio Bika.. very impressive. He does not beat Kessler or Calzaghe though, but he is better than all the other SMW's..

Yeah, I didn't think this was a good fight for Joppy, he's past his prime @ MW & moves up 8 pounds to face a younger, stronger guy. Yet Joppy was saying before the fight that Bute wasn't on his level.

Side note, I've been seeing a woman who's friend is Joppy's cousin.

I'd say Bute is a top 5-8 SMW ... the Bika win was a good one. Hard to say he is overrated since he is basically being overlooked by all the media and other SMW.

Of course I was referring to local media, Mikey. Don't you read Le Journal de Montreal?

Missed that one ... locals are always going to overrate the local guy ... but I think he is over looked a little on the national scene.

Oops, perhaps I owe him an apology as I forgot he defeated Sakio Bika.

I have to agree with you here .. the SMW division is pretty packed right now, even if you take Joe out of the equation. But I put Bute between 5-8 on the list. I wouldn't put him at 3.

I think you have Kessler, then the mess of Taylor, Miranda, Froch, Inkin and then maybe Bute.

Well i don't agree that hes so far down.. And if you are gonna put Froch, Inkin and Miranda on there doesn't Mundine also deserve a spot? Inkin was knocked down by Martin Abel Bruer and some other bum whos name i can't remember. He doesn't have any big wins except Mario Veit. Carl Froch does have power but is waay to open and doesn't have a win that would put him over Bute for me.. Taylor has not fought yet at SMW.. Miranda has beaten Henry Porras and David Banks at SMW only. Butes wins against Sakio Bika, Kabary Salem, Andre Thysse, Alejandro Berrio and Lolenga Mock is much bigger i think.

Well you just lost all credibility by counting a win against Joppy ... Miranda's work at MW far outclasses that list you put up, as does Taylors. Froch & Inkin I don't know enough about but I have watched Bute and I think he is solid but I'm not ready to crown him top 2 or 3 yet. I don't think he can beat Taylor or Miranda.

Taylor would be a hard one - i'll give you that. But i can't see him losing against Miranda.. His power alone (which is about what he got) won't beat someone as skilled as Bute.
