Maskaev-Peter (spoiler thread)
Well, now that the fight is finally upon us, what are your thoughts? I know that many in the boxing world are of the opinion that Oleg is simply going to show up, get knocked out, and hand over the big green belt. However, I think that he may do better than some expect.
The "Big O" by TKO 7 Any new predictions?

Sure, Maskaev looks improved but I'm not sure that he's good enough for Peter.
Peter by KO inside 5 rounds.

After seeing how McCline had Peter jiggling all around, one can't help but wonder what would happpen if Oleg connects solid.
Peter wins if he shows up focused the way he did for the second Tony fight, but that big ring won't make it easy. Last edited by Bronx Bomber 15 : 03-06-2008 at 08:04 PM. |

What would be better for boxing? A stunning 8th round KO of Samuel Peter by an aging Maskaev or another decision win by Peter ala McCline? If both guys are in good shape and willing to trade this could be a nice little fracas. The edge should go to Peter, but that moment against McCline shows the Nigerian Nightmare can be hurt.

I can tell you what would be good for heavyweight boxing - an exciting, action-packed fight with power punches being thrown and landed. Not another snoozefest like Klitschko-Ibragimov. I respect Klitschko for wanted to unite the belts and for his boxing skill, but how is anybody going to promote his next fight? Who would pay to see his next performance after his last showing? It better be another free broadcast, because it will not do any sort of ratings if it is PPV. Hell, even Manny knew that, why else would he be telling his fighter to go get a knockout and risk getting floored or worse yet, losing, when the fight was all but decided. Steward knew it was enough to win but not enough to sell. I am like Mr. Big, I like HW fights, but give me another little man war like Vazquez-Marquez any day compared to what we have right now in the heavyweight division.

At the end of the day I wonder how much the beating Klitschko gave Samuel Peter took out of him.
He went on to fight Toney who can't punch his way out of a preschool class but the first time he faced someone with a little pop he gets loopy. I've seen it a million times where a guy gets beat pillar to post without getting stopped and then gets glassy from that point on in his career. |

Actually, I was pondering what would be better for the division and boxing, a win by a strong but aging Maskaev or a win by a powerful but flawed Peter? A draw would be bad, unless they both put on such a spectacular fight that you can't bring yourself to pick one over the other.
If 10-15 years ago someone had told me that one day soon all the heavyweight belts would be held by white guys from Europe I would've said they were crazy. ![]() Cap

Even though the logical choice here would be Peter.......something is telling me that Oleg might pull another surprise out of his hat.
Peter was worked over by Wlad pretty and sometimes one fight can take a lot out of you. I'll even go furter and say this is a very piviotal fight for Sam considering that he was KD three times against a pretty light puncher in McCline. |

I'm rooting for a late round KO by "Big O", but I forsee him quitting on his stool before round 7 and claiming that his back was reinjured. Peter will get the TKO victory, but not in the dramatic fashion he expects.

Peter looked alright. He should only get a rematch with Klitschko because he had him down in their first fight.
I liked Campbell in the fight. I just don't think that a guy that doesn't run to get in shape but swims instead, and has a spare tire at lightweight can get hit in the body by a puncher. And I really think that is what did him in. I think Diaz can physically come back. But mentally, I don't know. That was a beating... |
