And Julius Long, also known as the greatest fighter in the history of the world, played basketball and is in fact related to longtime NBA player Grant Long.

Curtis Woodhouse, who played football [soccer] as a pro with Sheffield United, Birmingham City, Rotherham United [loan], Peterborough United, Hull City, Grimsby Town and Rushden and Diamonds is currently undefeated as a pro boxer. He also said that the training that he done as a footballer was nowhere near as gruelling as the training he is now doing as a boxer.

Johnny Morton

I don't think I saw him on the list here. He only did MMA so it may not apply. He used to be wide receiver for Detroit Lions and KC Chiefs iirc.

I saw him get knocked very, very cold in a fight about 8 months ago. I don't know if he has continued his 'career' or not since I don't follow MMA all that closely. Any martial art is fun for me to watch, but boxing (and judo when I can see it) always rule.

Be well

I saw a tape of this fight. He made a bad career move.

Just another example of receivers being, in general, the dumbest players on a football field.

I was trying to disagree with the above statement but I couldn't think of anybody dumber than WRs on average.

My hierarchy of smartness from football players
Quarterback
Center
Other offensive linemen (although not always in the football sense. Still, the vast majority of really good interviews are offensive linemen. Pete Kendall couldn't be anything other than an OL)
Middle linebacker
Defensive back (YMMV on this - safeties are probably smarter than corners but it's really close))
Outside linebacker
Defensive line
Running back
Wide receiver
Tight end (okay, maybe somebody is stupider than WRs but it is really, really, really close... TEs are basically the David Ecksteins of football. As such they usually aren't terribly bright. I submit SHOCKEY SHOCKEY SHOCKEY and Kellen "I'm in a war!!!" Winslow Jr. as my prime examples)

Kickers and punters do not count because they are not really football players.

It is pretty easy to dismiss kickers as actual players these days. I started watching football back in the 50's. In that era roster sizes were limited to 36 guys. Kickers and punters were also position players. Guys who just kicked were pretty rare, like Don Chandler and Ben Agajanian. Even Chandler was listed on the Giants roster as a hb. Sam Baker, one of the hybrid punter/kickers was also a back up fullback. Wasn't until the 60's when kickes started to become overly specialized.

No, he didn't continued fighting. More accurately he wasn't allowed to continued as after the fight he refused to be drug tested and so was stripped of his license and his fight purse as well I believe. Like Bear said very bad career move on his part.

He isn't the only former football play to try MMA as Micheal Westbrook, former Redskins WR, Jarrod Bunch, former Giants FB, Bobby Jones, former Giants OL, Carlton Haselrig, Former All-Pro OL for the Steelers and later played for the Jets, and Marcus Jones, former Tampa Bay DT, have all made the move over.

Just saw these NCAA stats. Thought they were interesting based on a recent discussion on this thread:

Percentage of NCAA student-athletes who become professional athletes:
Men’s Basketball - 1.2%
Women’s Basketball - 1.0%
Football - 1.8%
Baseball - 9.4%
Men’s Ice Hockey - 3.7%
Men’s Soccer - 1.7%

Hockey a la Ice draws more than football and basketball combined....now there's an odd stat.

It is a very small number. Going into our 6th year at Westview we have only had 3 kids go to either a 1A or 1AA school and we have had some pretty good teams. Adrian Conway RB Weber State, Shelley Smith OL Colorado State and Guy Reynolds OL Idaho.

In fact from last years State 5A2 runnerup only Reynolds went to a 4 year school. Our TB, FB and DE all went to Jr Colleges and that is it at this point.

No D3 or NAIA players? I know grades play a big part in D3 but they don't in NAIA.
