Mayweather retires?
Saw a breaking story on ESPN that he's retiring & won't fight Oscar in Sept.
NEWS FLASH Mayweather retires again! Dear Media: It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport. I have said numerous times and after several of my fights over the past two years that I might not fight again. At the same time, I loved competing and winning and also wanted to continue my career for the fans, knowing they were there for me and enjoyed watching me fight. However, after many sleepless nights and intense soul-searching I realized I could no longer base my decision on anything but my own personal happiness, which I no longer could find. So I have finally made up my mind, spoken to my family, particularly my mother, and made my decision. I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead, including the one right around the corner. But there comes a time when money doesn't matter. I just can't do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time. Finally, I want to personally thank all of my fans for their loyalty and dedication as my career comes to a close. I always believed that their enthusiasm and support helped carry me to victory with every fight I ever had. It was a great joy to have fought for all of you. Now I hope you understand my decision and wish me well with the rest of my life. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Friday, June 6 2008 Last edited by hamed : 06-06-2008 at 06:02 PM. |

Floyd is not retiring for good. We'll probably see DLH fight Cotto in September and whoever wins (most likely Cotto), it will set up a more lucrative matchup with PBF sometime in early 09. IMO this is just a buisness ploy.

I agree with a87star. I don't buy this as a full retirement at all and I expect to see Mayweather back in the ring soon enough.

I can see all the Floyd haters coming out now and starting their crap about him avoiding a second fight with Oscar and ducking Cotto, ect.
Those people don't realize how much buisness sense PBF has. He knows that if he retires right now......a WW/JMW will come along and offer a huge sum of money for him to come out of retirement. Floyd is just looking to see which fighter will give him the biggest payday at this point. |

I agree with Kent here ... I don't think Mayweather sees the point in another fight with ODLH .... just another chance for GBP to rip him off. He has a better shot at staying undefeated if he fights a non GBP fighter.
If Cotto gets past Margarito, then Cotto/Oscar is a huge fight and Mayweather can unretire for about 25 mil to fight Cotto. |

Floyd probably looks at a rematch with DLH as a "been there, done that" type of situation. He already beat Oscar pretty convincingly in the first fight but almost got shafted by the judges. A second fight would only make a crooked decision against PBF much greater because it's pretty obvious DLH would do anything at this point to "avenge" his loss. |

Though he probably won't stay retired, I rather hope he will follow in Marciano's footsteps and go out now, while he's on top. I'm getting really tired of athletes who retire and come back and then retire and come back...it's boring and undignified.
It's especially tragic to see boxers who just don't know when to bow out gracefully. Whatever Floyd decides to do, I wish he had waited until Monday to make this announcement. The attention of the boxing world should be focused on Kelly Pavlik. |

I really didn't want to see that rematch anyway. Mayweather vs Cotto is what I want to see and I most likely still will in 2009. Not sure who Oscar will fight now. I hope it isn't Hatton who I want to see fight Pauly Mag.

Oscar is a joke ... he is going to finish his career beating up on little guys. I've always been a fan but he is going out scared. He spent the last few years fighting big fights, who cares if he lost. Now the rumors are Hatton and Pac Man. Seriously Pac Man? He started his career at 106. What does it prove if he wins either of those fights? Why not Vernon Forrest? Even Cory Spinks or Zab Judah is better than Pac Man or Hatton.
I hate to say it but I am rooting for David Diaz now, just so the fight doesn't happen. Last edited by mh2365 : 06-06-2008 at 10:25 PM. |

Totally agree with the above post, and aside from his popularity what hasa he done in the last couple few years to get all these big fights anyway.
I mean he has lost half of his meaningful fights lately anyway, and smacking little guys around has never impressed me. Greg

I don't think a lot of people wanted to see another DLH/PBF fight. All these outrageous matchups like Hatton/Pacquiao are fueled by greed. The fights that should be made are often not considered because of money and boxing politics.
DLH needs to go fight guys his own size and stop picking on overmatched smaller fighters. Last edited by a87star : 06-06-2008 at 10:37 PM. |

Sounds to me like Maywether wants to retire undefeated and will wait until Hoya, Margarito and Cotto have beaten each other up, then take on the last man standing. Maywether is a smart businessman like Roy Jones and is very canny about who he selects as an opponent.

1. Mayweahter is a hell of a boxer...
2. Mayweather is a drama queen.... 3. Mayweather is risk-adverse.... 4. Mayweahter is the best of his time... 5. Mayweather would have had his ass handed to him by the likes of Hearns, SRL, Duran, Pryor, Sweet Pea......to name a few.......But so would 99% of guys.... 6. Mayweather is NOT retired......he's immature and bored....and wants attention... |

Mayweather is twice the defensive fight SRL ever even thought to be. Also I think Mayweather isn't different than most fighters out there right now as far as being risk adverse they all are looking for the easiest fight for the most money ... you put SRL in today's boxing world and he would be doing the same thing. SRL needed Duran and Hearns to make a big payday, nowadays they get 10 million for fighting a stiff. That is why you just can't compare era's. |

I'm not convinced he is retired. I would be devistated if I never got to see him lose a fight, maybe thats why he is retiring. He knows how much it would bug me if he retires undefeated.

Once again ... warrior's heart in boxing only means you get punched in the face a lot. The idea is to punch and not get punched back ... Mayweather excels at that. Still he has 25 ko's in 39 wins. Mayweather wins 10 rounds to 2 over SRL really it wouldn't be close.
Every fighter they ever claimed to be a warrior or had heart was because they took a beating in the ring ... still won usually but took a beating. Why do that when you don't have to? |
