WNF (spoilers)

Did anyone watch this tonight? Sechew Powell, who just won an IBF eliminator against Terrance Cauthen, was upset by DeAndre Lattimore via a seventh round KO. Powell started out well but from the fourth round on.....he just looked gassed and Lattimore took advantage and started fighting on the inside which completely changed things. Another upset has been recorded.

On the undercard, MW prospect Peter Quillin won a UD over Dionisio Miranda. "Kid Chocolate" might end up winning a title down the line along with fellow NYC prospect Joe Greene.

* I'm not a huge Quillin supporter. He is too easy to hit and can't fight on the inside. Powell, who had the kiss of death in his corner (budyy mcgirt) didn't look like he was ready to fight. He had no business being #1 in the world anyway. Powell is the poster child for what is wrong with boxing. Handlers are too afraid of a loss so they build there fighters up on crap to get a title shot.

IT - good one about Buddy.

Before the fight, Powell sure talked alot about how he was the best JMW in the world. They were saying that DeAndre had not really fought anyone because he was based in the midwest. Powell fought Ishe Smith & Ouma (lost to him) but I was surprised by that result.

DeAndre has improved so much under Kenny Adams. He definitely deserves the IBF title shot against Verno Phillips or at least do another elimintor fight because Powell proved last night he isn't world class.

Mark - I agree with you on the flaws of Quillin. That said........he'll definitely win some sort of minor title and be a nice draw for the NYC boxing scene. I'm not sure he'll ever be world class but you never know. At this point, Joe Greene has the higher upside.

---Oh ok....he might win an NABF type title but that will be about the extent of it. Joe Green is promising but needs to fight someone with a heartbeat.

I thought this was a great fight! Very entertaining. Powell seemed upset by the stoppage, but I thought it was entirely appropriate. A big "thumbs up" to the referee for knowing when to step in. Powell was taking far too many big head shots and doing very little to fight back.

He might claim he was playing possum, but I thought the idea of playing possum was to scale back on your own aggression in order to lure the other guy in, not scale back on your own aggression and take numerous punches to the head.

From what the guys in his corner were saying to him, and from the look on his face and his body language between rounds, Powell was just getting out fought. It's that simple.

This fight--including Teddy Atlas' prefight analysis--is a great example of why boxing is such a fascinating sport.

Before the fight Lattimore addressed the general assessment that he was the underdog and that Powell was probably out of his league by saying quietly: "After this fight they gonna be shakin' they heads wondering what happened."

And he truly came through.

What a good fight!

Greene and Teron should step up their competition soon. Both guys have been fighting journeymen for the last 6-12 months. It's time to make a move.

Lattimore was landing really clean, hard shots from fourth round on. The ref could have stopped any time before that because there were numerous times during the prior rounds where Powell got hurt and looked like he was ready to go.

Sechew Powell tested positive for marijuana after getting KO'ed by Lattimore.

That should not take away from DeAndre doing what he had to do to win. He behave like a fighter and Powell didn't.
