Fleischer and Andrie(sp) An illustrated History od boxing had good background and loads of pics.

The same can be said for The Big Book of Boxing

One of my personal favorites is Gilbert Odd's Encyclopedia of Boxing. last edition was in 1988 but you can probably find used copies. Lots of background info and short bios of a ton of fighters. Lot of coverage of guys from the UK.

The late Harry Mullan also has a real good encylopedia of boxing and a new edition recently came out earlier this year. I don't remember who is now editing it. Has background history, bios, and an excellent listing of title bouts by weight class.

I use both of these last two quite a lot.

Another good place to look for out of print books is

The Advanced book exchange

AbeBooks: New & Used Books, Textbooks, Rare & Out of Print Books

You'll enjoy Gilbert Odd's book. He also authored a number of bios of specific boxers. I can give a testamonial to anything he wrote, and to Harry Mullen as well.

This is the thing that bugs me with boxing books. Finding them! I don't like buying used books. You never know what someone has done to them, how they've been stored etc... But mainly I LOVE getting a brand new book. And finding decent boxing books is bloody hard!

I've had a book on my wishlist at Amazon for ages. The publication date was moved, moved and moved... Then after two years of endless delays, it's now "out of print".

Anyone recommend any GOOD, CURRENT boxing encyclopedias I can actually BUY from Amazon without dealing with third parties etc...?

Boxing greats (1998) by Steve Bunce is a good book if you are new to the sport. It covers the greatest fighters and matchups in an understandable way.
