Thanks for clearing that up Syd. I suspected the problem would be with OO but it's always nice to get an explanation.

I would be interested in hearing about people's experiences with the file. I'm still not clear on how it's used, but then again I'm not the most computer-savvy of people.

I've never tried it with OpenOffice but it's a moot point now anyway. As I've said on the last page, I was able to open it but the Macros wouldn't work. Guess non-Ms users are out of luck.

Looks like some of you are out of luck - sorry about that. Yes, an excel file containing a macro is pretty much locked into MS Office, and this particular file even in its basic state now contains three which are absolutely essential to the operation of the sheet.

Adding names, or anything else in manually simply doesn't work - the scheduling and result driven sections are far too complex to do manually.

Anyways I have attached an updated sheet which should work perfectly. The first one I posted had a tiny error which prevented the career stage from changing correctly.

Well I expect peoples experiences will be rather frustrating, as it is a BETA.

However, I am hopeful that the feedback received will allow me to correct and adjust to a point where this will become the gold standard basic universe, so anyone can pick it up and use it as a way to get a universe going.

The how is fairly simple, it allows you to run a single division of between 10 and 50,000 simultaneous fighters. With simple button clicks, realistic schedules are created (newcomers fight other newcomers and journeyman, contenders fight opponents with an eye to improving their ranking, the champ either fights the best or ducks em).

The sheet automatically advances time, ages the fighters and ranks them based on my very unique (and I think incredibly accurate!) ranking system. This is all presented in an easy to view sheet.

I created this because I found that using previously presented Excel based universes was tedious and very user intensive.

I don't have the patience to gather together photos of fighters, I'm not very good at creating new fighters - so this seemed the best way I could add value to the group.

But will it work with Office XP once that compatibility thing has been done or will there still be a problem with the macros?

I hope this is not a stupid question

I entered 10 names in column A in the Pool tab as a test to see how it works

I go to the Main tab hit Add Fighter and get this error

Run-time error '438':
Object doesn't support this property or method

What did I do wrong?

It will run on virtually any operating system as far as I am aware. However, in order for it to be functional it must be running one of the following:

1) Excel 2003 with 2007 adapter (this SHOULD work)

-or-

2) Excel 2007

The VBA script which drives the macros will simply not co-operate with any other spreadsheet program.

Not at all - no stupid questions because quite frankly I need people to test it and find the errors.

I need to see the sheet you are using. First question that pops into my mind, did you leave the existing 'test' names in the active and main sheets before trying to add a fighter? These are required when adding your first fighters in.

Maybe I can get my Dad's Excel later this week. I'll be very happy to beta test then.

I used the download from post # 44

I had to convert to use in 2003, maybe that is the issue???

I opened program, went to the pool tab, entered in the names.
I then went to the main page and clicked Add Fighter.

Then the ERROR

I did nothing else. It might be because of the conversion. Anyone else having an issue who have converted it?

Ok.

Normally this error refers to a dll issue / compatibility. I MAY be able to fix it so it worked for you, but I would have to know the exact line in the code where the issue is occuring - without having your PC in front of me I can't do that.

I would suggest trying the following.

Instead of pressing the button that says 'Add Fighter', actually go into your Macro menu and run the macro manually - it is possible that the interface button itself is not compatible.

If this doesn't work, if you know how, take a screenshot of the VBA code indicating the line where the code falls down - that would give me a hint as to why.

Hope that helps.

I have a couple of questions.

1. How do I delete the test fighters so that I can enter my own fighters?

2. How do I make a guy start at something other than 'Beginning'? I like to have fighters who began their career when they were 27 or older start at Pre-Prime.

3. Also, how do I enter the results on the schedule page? I've put them in a few different places but I can never get it to update the Main screen.

Other than that, this looks great and I'm thinking I'll start a fictional universe to test it out.

This will be much easier by the time a finished product is presented, but for the time being you do it as follows:

1) Delete the 'test' names in the 'Pool' tab in Column A. In the same column, starting from A1 down enter the names of the fighters that will compete in your universe.

2) Go to the 'Main' tab and click the add Fighter button. Do this at least four times, as this universe requires at least four active fighters at any one time to operate for the moment.

3) You will notice that the main screen will now have your four fighters, plus all the test fighters that were initially there. Select the rows (the entire row, not just the cell) that contain the test fighters and right-click delete. Please do not hit the delete button on the keyboard as this will only clear the contents of the cells. What you are aiming for is to have the rows vanish and have just your fighters remaining. You need to carefully repeat this process on the 'Active' and 'Ranking' tabs.

That should do it.

Great suggestion. The workbook is not actualy set up to do that, YET. However, their is a very easy way to make the sheet do this if you want to right now. In the 'Active' tab you will notice their is a large number of data for each fighter. Right at the end of that data is a list of results for each fighter (They appear as WK, LK, WDQ etc etc - you should probably look at the test fighters before you delete them). You can simulate these results, and hence advance the fighters age by manually entering in some of these results - just make sure you don't leave any gaps from left to right. And make sure they are entered in the proper format. The choices are WK, WD, WDQ, DD, NC, LD, LK, LDQ.

If you click on the corresponding cell in Column D you will be presented with a little arrow next to the cell. Click that, and it will give you a choice of results to choose from. Make sure you pick the result that reflects what happened to Fighter A. Ie. If Fighter B defeated Fighter A by knockout, the result is "LK" (Fighter A lost by Knockout to Fighter B). when all the results have been entered, click the "Process" button in the header banner. Presto - done.

Just remember, this is a test - don't get to upset if things go wrong in the middle of your timeline....

I put where it is highlighted from the visual basic in RED. In the Pool tab after the error in column B line 1 this is now there:

Hmmm...... I think I see why this is not working with your software - and as a result you've helped me detect another potential future problem. Please try the attached file (that goes for everybody by the way, disregard the earlier ones) and tell me whether or not it works.

Scratch that..... try this one

For all those wondering why I keep doing this, every little bit of information is leading me to areas where I can clean out the code driving the workbook. I'm trying to keep everyone as up to date as possible during the process.

I got mine in a special deal at Fry's about four months ago for like $80. Since MS products had never, ever gone on sale in the past (IIRC Microsoft forbade a couple stores from selling any of their products ever again when they tried to sell Windows 95 at a special price), I grabbed that up like nothing. You probably won't find a deal that good but the going price for it isn't *too* bad: $150. If you have kids, you can probably even convince the wife that it's for them.
