A new way of "universing"
Hi all,
This is my first post, thank you all for reading. I have owned title bout for a number of years, and enjoyed it a great deal. I enjoyed it a great deal further when I began searching this forum, and found two things: 1) Cubedrum's photo pack (god bless the guy) 2) An excel based universe (I can't remember the author, I'm sorry) I have taken a great deal from the people that post here that have enriched my enjoyment of TBCB so much - and now soon I have something to offer in return. The reason for this post - and please, I mean no disrespect - I have created an Excel based universe that is far in advance of any that have been posted here previously. Many of the excel universes that have been offered here previously are fantastic - but the downside is that they ask you to do a great deal many things outside of the sheet itself. Ie, roll a die, change the age, change the date, schedule fights etc etc. The only thing my universe needs is the following: 1) Create a list of fighters: Can be 10 can be 10,000, doesn't matter. They will be picked out, activated, age and retire in due time. all you have to do is create the list of names. (You can just export the database from TBCB if need be) 2) Three steps: Click button one, and a fighter is 'born' into your universe. Click button two and fights are scheduled, and you use a drop down menu to record the result (W, L, DQ, NC, D, KO, LKO etc etc etc). Click button three, and all results are processed, rankings, fighter records EVEN the change of a world title. 3) You have to manually change the age and activation of a fighter in TBCB. Sorry, the sheet can't do it for you. It will warn you to make the change, but you still have to do it in TBCB. The reason for the post: I have worked on this since November, it isn't quite ready but it is getting there. I have poured many, many hours into this and was not going to post it if it was to be ignored. What I am basically looking for is an expression of interest. If people would like to see and use it then great, i'll give it away no problem. If people have question as to how the sheet operates under certain scenarios, Ie; who does the World Champ fight, how do veterans fit in, who gets ranked etc etc, I'd like to hear them now. I anticipate this will be ready in about three weeks, and really wanted to use the feedback of the people on this forum to: 1) Gauge interest, ie. should I post it and 2) Get feedback and questions which might help me improve it before release. Greatly appreciate you reading this - hope you have a comment. Kind Regards, Jade. |

It sounds very interesting to me. It could create a lot more randomness in a universe perhaps.
Tell me how you handle the schedule, who fights who and so on. Edit: And yes, you should definately post it so that we can try it. Welcome to the forum btw. Last edited by Tommysixfingers; 07-31-2008 at 10:46 AM. |

I'm very interested! -
I'm in the process of starting up a whole new Universe - Have been waiting for the AI fix before launching it - This sounds great. |

Welcome to the board.
Sounds interesting, does it include any kind of random injury generator? |

This sounds interesting, I agree. I'm sure just about everyone would like to simplify the process of creating, stocking and managing a universe. Not everyone is very familiar with the in's and out's of excel, but if the instructions on how to use the spreadsheet functions are included, you may have the "universe of the future" on your hands.

Chiming in with interest as well.
A few questions though: Will this require Office 2007? If not, is this compatible with Open Office? Can you include a sheet of "constants" which can be altered by the end-user to adjust the end result of things like scheduling or world championship defenses? |

Thank you all for your responses let me try and answer some of the queries raised:
"Tell me how you handle the schedule, who fights who and so on" This was actually the hardest part to figure out. I don't know whether you have tried this yourself, but trying to get excel to schedule bouts based on ever changing criteria, ever changing fighter numbers, based on who is active and who is not, making sure unrealistic bouts are not set (ie a guy with two or three fights isn't going to fight a ranked contender) avoiding odd numbers of fighters etc etc. Then their is the problem of making sure that the same process was not followed everytime, for example, if the world champion is active, you don't want him automatically fighting the highest ranked opponent because in reality he may take an easy fight, he may fight the fifth ranked fighter etc etc. This one problem alone took me nearly three months to overcome - I was so happy when it finally worked for me. Basically, the scheduler determines who is active in any given month. The World Champ (if one exists) fights once or twice a year, highly ranked contenders maybe two or three times, journeyman maybe as much as 10-12 times. The fighters are then paired up based on certain criteria. A seasoned verteran may fight a new up and comer, he may fight a ranked contender, he may be given a shot at the title a la Holyfield style. Newcomers will concentrate on fighting dead beats, until their handlers decide they are ready to step up. Could be five fights, could be eight, could be fifteen - you as the user don't know (In reality all the calculations are done to determine when). "Sounds interesting, does it include any kind of random injury generator" No, but if their is an interest in it I could easily incorporate it. The fighters are already randomly active as mentioned above, but if you wanted this as an extra, say for a long period of inactivity I could work it in. "This sounds interesting, I agree. I'm sure just about everyone would like to simplify the process of creating, stocking and managing a universe. Not everyone is very familiar with the in's and out's of excel, but if the instructions on how to use the spreadsheet functions are included, you may have the "universe of the future" on your hands." You almost shouldn't need instructions. You will have a main page that has buttons on it, saying "Add Fighter", "Schedule", and "process results". I'm even thinking about adding a "Title Histiry" button. All other details, like ranking, records and the like are all their on different tabs if you want to see them at any given time. Thats pretty much it. "A few questions though: Will this require Office 2007? If not, is this compatible with Open Office?" This will not require Office 2007. I specifically avoided its use knowing that not everyone could use it. Should be ok with open office. "Can you include a sheet of "constants" which can be altered by the end-user to adjust the end result of things like scheduling or world championship defenses?" Can I? Yes I suppose - I'd need a bit more detail as to what you specifically wanted to achieve. I wouldn't have something that said for example "Champion fights X amount of times in a year", because the randomness to me is part of the attraction of what I have done. I WANT to be frustrated by the fact that my champ seems to be ducking the No 1. Contender because it feels REAL. I have thrown in a screenshot below of what the main screen is beginning to look like. Keep in mind this is FAR from complete, but you get the idea of what sort of info is available. Thanks for the feedback - keep it coming - the better I can make this the more we will all enjoy it. |

I am interested as well, and welcome to the board. I used to think I was fairly smart but, since joining the board a year ago, I've revised my self-impression.

I am about to 'return' to my uni and I have been thinking about how to incorporate injuries/events into the universe. If you have the time to put this into your spreadsheet let me know and I will dig out the link to the injury sheet that I 'borrowed' off a poster.
Cheers |

Amen brother...feel the same way. The community here is second to none..period. No dummies here..well..maybe myself but I am trying. LOL. This sounds really interesting. I always listen to others ideas and how they play the game/universe..and I pick and choose a little from all. Take care everyone.

Hi all,
Thanks for the ideas. I am working on this - I haven't forgotten. Just a reminder - I am really looking for ideas as to what YOU want your universe to be - You tell me and I will see if I can make it work. I haven't found a reasonable suggestion I can't incorporate. Thx |

Looking for volunteers
Hi Guys,
I must apologise sincerely for the delay - you all know how it is, work family etc etc etc etc, you just don't get the time. Long story short, I have a working BETA. I'm looking for volunteers who are willing to spend their time and find me issues, suggestions within what I have - anyone interested? |
