Bear, I've read that bit before about boxing being banned in Chicago because of the Gans-McGovern fight in 1900. I know of three fights involving Tommy Burns that took place in Chicago in 1904. I'm sure there were others. The author of the recent Sam Langford bio repeated this story about the ban. But then he also glossed over the multi-state ban on mixed fights circa 1911.

Applies if a fighter has booked a bout versus a name fighter in a venue that is not near the fighters residence. On the day of the fight a dub, faux Joe Blow, a talent free tomato can, shows up for the fight trying to get a quick buck yor his efforts and his shady manager. Fighter boxes the dub, the crowd is not amused, and the fighter becomes a laughingstock for a few months.

Superior fighter carries a local fighter to make him look good and get another payday in a rematch. Works if no KO or DQ results from fight.
Schedule a rematch with the fighter within a month

I didn't want to mention the colour bar, Cap, but that was an unfortunate fact of that era. Jack Skelly's 1892 bout vs. George Dixon was, if memory serves, the last mixed bout in New Orleans until the late '50s or early '60s.

The colour bar was even more notorius in the HW division, as w eknow.

From what I've read, some ordinance was passed after the Gans-McGovern fight that impeded professional boxing in Chicago without stopping it altogether.

One version says amateur fights were allowed (which presumably would allow professionals masquerading as amateurs), another says fights were allowed only with in private clubs with no admission charged (but there would presumably be club dues).

If you look at boxrec it does appear that, well into the twenties, activity in Chicago was very limited. I guess for the purpose of this thread the moral of the story is that a scandal or tragedy may lead to legislation that inhibits boxing in a locality or affects the way it can be promoted, without stopping it altogether.

A lot of fights moved to Indiana.

Supporters of anti-prizefighting blues laws raise a stink about the pending scheduled fight. Legal authorities ban the fight. It will be canceled unless a hasty change of venues, and possibly dates, can be found in another state

In the states the Benezah clan, a fighting family from Ohio, plied their trade in carnival side shows at times. Across the pond there was the tradition of boxing booths. We could possibly simulate this manner in which some fighters learn their craft. A boxer coming up in this manner could begin his legitimate ring career at prime. He could fight a series of bouts against auto-generated dubs to advance his career state and then have his fight history deleted when he begins his "legitimate" career

Fighter is a highly succeesful and well know amateur fighter. To simulate this he starts his career at prime, like Jack Skelly did in his title bout versus George Dixon.

To intimidate his opponent, a fighter brings a doctor and two stretcher bearers with him as he enters the ring. They get stationed near his opponents corner. For this fight only reduce the opponents aggression by 2 and the round after which the fighter "starts" up to 4.

For any result other than a draw or a no contest.

Gamblers, thugs, and unsavorys attend the fight backing both sides. The losers riot fighting the opponent's support and causing the referee, winner, wnnier's cornermen, and manager to flee for their lives. Weapons are brandished by the rioting mob, gun shots are fired. Their is a percentage chance that the winner is injured while fleeing and must be inactive for a time while recovering.

A seperate chart for non-ring events and injuries may be needed to see how long he'll be out of action.

An after effect on the riot is that boxing in the venue area gets a blackeye and no fights will be held in the area for 6 months to a year.

This one time event could happen after any HW titlefight beginning in the year 1897.

The following condition has to be met for this event to have taken place. The loser of the titlefight must have knocked the winner down at least once in the fight prior to losing the bout. The manager of the loser hosts a dinner and invites fight officials and the press to attend. During dinner he shws a film of the fight claiming to prove that his man was robbed of the title. When the winner of the fight is knocked down while the film is being run he has the attendees count. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ....10, 11, 12, 13. "See, we was robbed." Unbeknownst to the attendees the manager as bribed the projectioist to slow down the speed of the film while showning the knowdown to "prove" his claim that his man was cheated out of the title.

The gullibility of the public can be gauged by percentage with a chance that the chicanary be exposed. At the very least there is a "taint" attached to the current champion that cannot be expunged until a rematch takes place.

If fight result is a draw the reason for the draw will have been police interference. The scheduled distance for the fight will have been either to the finish or 20 rounds
