Old Lance Haffner game question (how to open)

I use to play all of the old Lance Haffner games...and have recently truned on one of my older computers which has Court Side College Basketball on it.... It is an XP computer.

I can't figure out how to boot up the game? I think I use to open in DOS mode, perhaps? But I can't remember even how to do that?

Can anyone walk me through opening up a Lance Haffner game out of Windows XP

I think if you install it and then start it from its folder it will automatically open up the DOS prompt window... but I may be mistaken?

If Jim's suggestion doesn't work I would download a dos emulator and use that. Man, I used to play the hell out of all LH games back on my Apple II C. 3-1 Football, Full Count Baseball, The Basketball and Wrestling games and finally the first computer incarnation of TB.

That's the odd thing...I can't seem to find it installed within any of my program files folders?? (but I know it is on this computer).....It seems since I installed it via the 3.5 floppy drive for a DOS program ...it doesn't show up in the regular windows XP program folders...

I think I remember you type "hello" once you get your DOS command to the College Basketball directory to show up. Type in "hello" and then that launches the Court Side College basketball screen to come up.

I just can't remember what is the correct DOS commands. Something like CD\??...... I don't know. I know it isn't as hard as I'm trying to recall. I clearly use to play it all the time off this XP system.

If I do get one of those DOS programs...... DOSbox I belive is one. I wonder if that will launch it....or will I still have to remember the correct path and commands??

I have used dosbox to run Haffner games on vista. I would think it should work for xp as well.

I think I must have deleted my Court Side College Basketball......from this computer... Which sucks.

Now, I have the 3.5 floppy Disk to install...but I don't have the 1990 season disk (I would want, in order to play / sim it).

I have been trying to reach Lance Haffer via email and phone for the past week to no avail (yet). Hopefully he gets back with me soon. More than happy to purchase a new game..

I called Lance once back in the 90's and talked to him on the phone. He must have been having a bad day because he didn't sound too upbeat. There was a time when Lance was King of the replay realm.

Let's say you have the game installed on your C drive (not in a folder, just on the drive). In DOS, you type (without quotation marks for any of these) "cd.." and press Enter until DOS just reads "C:/>" Then you type in "cd whatever_the_folder_name_is" So if the folder containing the game is "lhball," you type "lhball." Then, if that works, try typing "Hello" (I think you might be right regarding that starting the basketball game--starting Rampage WRestling used to mean just typing "Rampage").

Thanks!...That sounds about right... Plan to check it out when I get home......Though I think I may have deleted it.....and now I'm looking to repurchase from Lance Haffner but can't seem to get ahold of him / anyone to purchase it...

Broken Lance??

I'm under the impression that Haffner has closed up shop. There is/was a forum for his games, but it seems the members are the only the ones churning out current seasons. And the last time I was there (about six months ago) it was like a graveyard. Still, you might be able to get the seasons from him---please let us know if you do, there's a few I'm looking for as well.

I haven't really bothered with his games (although I own basketball, football, hockey, boxing, and wrestling versions) for a number of years so I was surprised to read a post above stating that you can run his games on XP--I've read elsewhere that you have to work it through the DOSBox. I'll have to dig them out and give it a try directly with XP.

Hopefully, Lance still has his past seasons disks / for sale..(I would almost be assured he does). And hopefully he will eventually get ahold of me.

As for running on XP. Yes, they do, with no problems whatsoever. My problem I lost my Court Side College basketball on my older XP system once I had to do a complete XP REinstall.........and since then I have lost my 1990 seasons disk that I want (I still have my Court Side College Basketball Disk...just not the season disk I want).

If you could, please either post or pm me should you be able to get those disks. I'll have to dig out my old Haffner floppies (God knows where they are!) and intstall them directly. I put them aside since I was under the impression that you couldn't use them with XP (at least that's what someone posted at the LH forum several years ago). I appreciate you providing me with the correct info.

Will do! I have my original 3.5 floppys (that work on XP) for Court Side College Hoops as well as 3 in 1 Football...... I know I had a 1990 seasons disk at one point...(and I think LH actually sent me a 1990 zip file once as well, I believe) but I can't find either of them.

Hopefully I'll hear back from him or someone else who does have the 1990 season I'm looking for.

I have his 3 in 1 football game. Bought it recently enough that it came on a CD rather than 3 1/2" floppy disks. I tried just about every possible configuration setting, etc... but it won't work directly thru XP. I have to run it thru DosBox.

At one time I think I had every game he offered and thought they were all great. But all those floppy disks are long gone now.

Mine ran fine on XP (as up to about a year ago....before Reinstall). I either ran it from the Dos Prompt from the Accessories Folder.....or I lauched the EXE file within the LH folder (and it went directly into the DOS program from there). But it definitely worked and ran fine on XP (at least up to SP2).

Hmmm....I'll give it try, and if I have problems I'll just pester you!

I have a lot of Haffner seasons For Courtside and for the college football game which I still played on my last laptop (Vista) but can't get them to work on my new laptop with windows7. I have tried to get a hold of Lance with no luck. I talked to him a couple years ago and he said he had had some health issues and the lady that had worked for him for many years was no longer with him. I can't remember her name but she was always very friendly on the phone and I had mistakenly thought she was Lance's wife, he corrected me on that the last time I talked to him. He didn't seem to interested in the games anymore and even the last time I talked to the lady she indicated that she was having a hard time getting Lance motivated on the games.

Anyone know where a guy could get a copy of Lance's wrestling game, "Rampage Wrestling?" I loved that game.
