TBCB Update 2/18/03
Hello all of you. Lots of news today:
1. Punch locations will now be a part of not only the commentary but also the functionality of the simulation. A revised approach to body punching is being implemented and a consistent inside attack will pay significant benefits. The Fighting Inside strategy will become truly effective when successful and the difference will be telling. 2. Clinching and Missing have also been revisited. A "normal" amount of clinching will have no noticeable affect on the fight but once past the acceptable level in a round or in a fight, clinching will diminish your chances of impressing the judges and could conceivably cost you in the scoring. Missing punches will have more of an affect on Endurance than it did previously. 3. Fighters who can either box or slug will now be checked each round to see which they'll do, regardless of which style might be best for them. Many factors will come into play before YOUR original choice is overridden. What is the status of the fight? What is the intellect of the fighter? What is the corner man's rating? However, a Holyfield or a Gatti might suddenly revert to slugging when it would have been wiser to box. 4. The "Fight Card" and "Betting" aspects have been eliminated from the straight simulation but will play a part in the role-playing segment. Overall, while we all wished this was done and over, we are pleased with what is taking place. Thank you all for your infinite patience. Thank you, too, for the many excellent suggestions, fighter information and offers to help. Sincerely, Jim Trunzo |

I'm very pleased with the new features. Good body punchers should get the credit they deserve. As the saying goes, "kill the body and the head will die" (by the way, didn't Joe Frazier come up with that one when preparing to fight Ali in 1971?).
I'm eagerly anticipating the release of the game. |

Sorry to hear that the "Fight Card" aspect has been eliminated from the straight sim. Have there been any other similar changes? Was it done for programming reasons? I hadn't used it much before because of the "Update" confusion, but I used it twice recently, once for the Sam Langford-Gunboat Smith card and later for the Boer Rodel-Wild Bert Kenny card.
Cap P.S. How's work coming on the action commentary?

With the advent of the role-playing module, the "Fight Card" concept made better sense there. When playing the straight "sim" we found that very few people seemed to use it. Hey, if enough of you want it left in, it's a small matter to have it available both places, I'm sure.
As far as the commentary goes, frankly, we're confused a bit as to what most people want. Basically, we are concentrating on doing three things: (1) adding more variety to the commentary; (2) allowing for "crowd noise" to fill the gap when the fighters are doing nothing instead of always having some 'color' statement being made, and (3) severly restricting the # of times something can be said. Most statements can only be made 1 time per fight. In addition, most of the statements are 'conditional' and will now work the way they were supposed to but didn't last time. For example, a statement about a fighter's condition was to be made once and no other statement made for the remainder of the fight. However, programming errors allowed not only repeats but also contradictions. Andreas, our new programmer from .400, has fixed all that. |

Commentary
When you mention "crowd noise", do you mean actual noise as in sound? Will there be sound in the new sim? If so, what exactly?

Wow, careful Jim, you may get us overly excited.
The progress sounds good, certainly makes me yearn for my old copy of the game. I had it, but that was a couple of computers ago. Can hardly wait for you to complete your efforts. Larry Philly

Yes, I mean sound, as in announcing various parts of the fight: intro, decision, etc. I forget that most of you haven't tried the TBQuiz game with all of its sound effects and original music score!

Jim, I also used the fight card option. Kind of slow to set up but it was something differant from other boxing sim's. If it's no problem getting it into the sim part of the game I would like to see it. But I'l still buy it regardless.
Can't wait till the real thing!! ED |

I use the fight card option exclusively. It should be an option in case a user has his own system for fight scheduling. Also any of the options available setting up a card should have RANDOM as a possible choice. This would make setup MUCH faster. Also you should be able to edit the parameters of randomizer. For example 10-15 rounds only, vs 6,8,10 12 or15 rounds. Or only US locations, or referees from a certain era etc.

Jim, thanks for the continuing updates on the game. It is good to hear that things are still progressing.
On a side note, I am trying to get a copy of the Avalon Hill Title Bout board game on an auction...from everything some of these "old-timers" (LOL) have been saying about it, I am dying to try it out.... Again, thanks for posting updates!

Longtime OOTP player. I might just have to get this when it comes out. However, I don't know much about boxing. Will I still be able to understand the game, get full enjoyment out of it etc...

Obviously, I'm biased but, yes, you should be able to. The basic concepts are simple, much more so than baseball. Even if you have only rudimentary knowledge of the real fighters, you'll be able to quickly ascertain the difference through the ratings.
Also, even if you no none of the fighters, you would be able to quickly grasp the concept of drafting a stable of fighters, making matches, etc. Extensive documentation and a much improved system of navigation will allow even novices to experience the enjoyment and challenge of the game. |
