More Responsible Cornermen

We've all seen fights that go on to long[mis-matches and what have you]. If god forbid, one of the men is injured. The finger immediatly points to the referee. The referee no doubt is partly to blame. But what about the corner men? Their supposed to be there for the fighter. Most fighters will never quit[they must have this mentallity]. Sometimes the corner men need to step up and throw in the towel. I just don't think it's done enough. How many managers would have stopped Frazier from continuing in the thriller in mannilla? For this reason I will always hold Eddie Futch in very high esteem.

Yes, I agree that Eddie Futch is a class act in the world of boxing. He was always extremely concerned with the welfare and health of the fighters he handled. Boxing needs more guys like him.

But it is a very tough call for a corner man to make. In all competitive sports, you are taught from the beginning to never give up, never quit. This notion is ingrained in the psyche of fighters and trainers alike. That is why the primary responsibility falls on the referee - who, as a neutral observer, is better equipped to make these judgements.

Think about it: when a fighter quits, he is accused of "having no heart". Trainers (usually ex-fighters) have the same mentality.

It's boxing. Sadly this is the nature of the game. Some of the greatest fights have been after someone as got back off the canvas took a beating then came back in the later rounds. If we stopped all fights early we'd never have some of the greatest fights of all time.

Ever boxer knows what he's in for when he steps in the ring. I think overall most fights are stopped sooner these days then they have EVER been stopped before. I've seen a guy just throw a flurry of missed shots lead to a stoppage.

The health of the fighters is important, but it is boxing, and boxing is about throwing and recieving punches.
