Headgear for Professionals
Having sparred myself over 50 rounds[I'm just a novice]. I have to say headgear should be mandatory for profesional fighters. I've sparred both with and without headgear. If you've never boxed, you would be surprised at how little the headgear does. Just that little bit of protection though might just save a few guys. If you think wearing headgear makes you not feel punches? I by all means recommend you get in the ring and find out for yourself.

Sorry, but I can't accept that. I understand from a humane standpoint your stance but head gear in the pros could even be counter-productive. Most fighters don't suffer serious injuries from a single blow but rather from accumulated damage. Head gear would simply allow them to take even more punches to the head. At best, it would be an even exchange - less damage from a single punch, offset by more punches. Also, more fighters take damage from hitting their heads on the canvas or, worse, the ropes. I would be in favor of a modified head piece that simply covered the back of the head. Just my thoughts.

Jim I never looked at it like that. I must agree with you. The extra padding would allow fighters to take more punches to the head. As far as headgear being femine-I totally disagree. Wayne,l bet you ride a motorcycle without helmet. More power to you bro.

I gotta agree win Trunzo. Most of the deaths in boxing happened after huge beatings in fights that went on way too long.
One punch deaths aren't very common at all. It takes the brain really getting knocked around to cause the swelling that is so bad that it can kill you. Taking more punches to the head, while slightly muffled seems to counteract the whole idea.

Don't forget about the impact of dehydrating oneself to make an unnatural weight as a mitigating factor in serious injuries in the ring. The extent to which that type of thing weakens a person cannot be overstated. If anything needs to be addressed it is that dangerous practice, IMO.

true . I do.(but have nothing against wearing them just choose not to) all I was getting at is that if professional boxing comes to that it would just be another tough man contest. (which turned into a male soap-oprah imo) wasn't trying to offend anyone by the comment.

I remember reading a study in college that indicated that most of the permanent damage done to a boxer's brain came as a result of the whipping motion when the head snaps to one side as a result of a punch. Headgear isn't going to change that, and, like Jim said, might even allow a fighter to take more punches that have that effect. For what it's worth, I've sparred with and without headgear, too, and didn't notice much of a difference. Getting punched in the head hurts like a bastard either way.
