Tournament methodology
How do you determine which fighters get to fight in your tournaments?
Do you have all "1's" fight the other "1's"? If the fighters with a rating of 10 or above fight only each other, then they get a 20-20 won-loss record....hardly fair. How do you balance the two? The need for even fights, and the need to give the big boys some easy fights. Help me out here, guys! |

To start my universe, I've been autoscheduling a series of bouts between all of the fighters in a weight class. For the first eight fights I set up a maximum rating difference of 10, so basically any fighter could fight any other one (and keeps the very top tier from fighting 1s and 2s). After eight rounds, I autoschedule two more bouts for the top % of fighters, going by ranking. For example, in the flyweight division only fighters ranked in the top 100 got to fight bouts #9 and #10. After 10 fights, I manually run a single elimination tournament between the top 8 or 16 boxers to determine a champion. I do this manually so that I can have the final bout be for certain titles.

I culled roughly 80 fighters for each major division between active and retired, combining cruisers/Heavy, SMW/LHW, etc. Then I autoscheduled 10 fights for each fighter in the division to get them going. Some fighters had it harder than others, but thats ok, I just take it as roleplay (ie their handlers pamper them, or they are ducking challenges etc.). Then once every man has 10 fights I take the top 16 ranked and put them in the WBC tourny, the next 16 in the WBA tourny, the next 16 in the IBF and the last 16 in the WBO. The winners of the tourny's are the respective champs.

I tend to seed tournaments, similar to a tennis championship, so that the top fighters will fight lower rated opponents in the earlier rounds. If everything goes according to the seeding the best boxer will have a 4-0-0 record after a 16 boxer tournament and the No. 2 seed a record of 3-1-0 etc. Of course the seeding doesn't alays work out, but that's life. If you want to use more than 16 fighters you can have a multiple tournament series, with the top fighters of the first tournaments going forward to the 'final' tournament, this requires a little paper work or a good memory

I use some sets of brackets I have to manually set up tournamens of all the boxers in a division. They are set up like triple elimination curling bonspiels so that I can have the A winner claim one title and the same with the B and C winners. The neat thing is that if one boxer goes undefeated through all three sections he holds all the titles at once.
