Rating Project 1960-62
Hi guys,
As I mentioned in a thread before I received as an Xmas present the 1960-62 issues of boxing illustrated. To give myself some structure to the fighters I add to the game, and also to give other people an insight and help into running a universe during this tme period I thought I would start a project. The aim is to add any fighter into the game who is rated either by the National Boxing Association or later by Boxing Illustrated themselves (in 1960 they only carry NBA ratings later they carry both). Also to list the ratings month by month to help anyone running this time period of boxing history. I will also rate other unranked fighters if an issue holds some good info on that fighter. To start us off below are the ratings published in the Jan 1960 issue (for the period ending October 30, 1959). All fighters currently not in the game in any division will be listed in capitals (I will then rate them in a following post). Note some fighters are ranke din different divisons than you find them in the game, in this case the game is not incorrect they were just multiple division fighters. Heavyweight Champion - Ingemar Johansson 1. Floyd Patterson 2. Zora Folley 3. Sonny Liston 4. Eddie Machen 5. Henry Cooper 6. Roy Harris 7. Charlie Powell 8. Billy Hunter 9. Alex Miteff 10. Joe Erskine Light Heavyweight Champion - Archie Moore 1. Harold Johnson 2. Eric Schoeppner 3. Jesse Bowdry 4. Yvon Durelle 5. VON CLAY 6. Sixto Rodriguez 7. Sonny Ray 8. Mike Holt 9. Bobo Olson 10. Chic Calderwood Middleweight Champion - Gene Fullmer 1. Spider Webb 2. Ray Robinson 3. Gustav Scholtz 4. Carmen Basilio 5. Dick Tiger 6. Joey Giardello 7. Joey Giambra 8. Holly Mimms 9. Ace Armstrong 10. Paul Pender Welterweight Champion - Don Jordan 1. Charles Scott 2. Sugar Hart 3. Luis Rodriguez 4. Florentino Fernandez 5. Rudell Stitch 6. Ralph Dupas 7. Denny Moyer 8. Gaspar Ortega 9. Duillio Loi 10. Kenny Lane Lightweight Champion - Joe Brown 1. Carlos Ortiz 2. Paolo Rosi 3. Battling Torres 4. Dave Charnley 5. Len Matthews 6. Johnny Gonsalves 7. Johnny Busso 8. Paulie Armstead 9. ALFREDO URBINO 10. Mauro Vasquez Featherweight Champion - Davey Moore 1. Harold Gomes 2. Paul Jorgenssen 3. Hogan Bassey 4. RICARDO GONZALES 5. Gracieux Lamperti 6. SERGIO CAPRARI 7. Ike Chestnut 8. Rafiu King 9. Flash Elorde 10. Ricardo Moreno Bantamweight Champion - Jose Beccera 1. Alphonse Halimi 2. Piero Rollo 3. Leo Espinosa 4. Danny Kidd 5. Joe Medel 6. Freddie Gilroy 7. Jose Lopez 8. HERMAN VASQUEZ 9. Eder Jofre 10. Alberto Ibarra Flyweight Champion - Pascual Perez 1. Sadao Yoito 2. Pone Kingpetch 3. Ramon Arias 4. Ramon Calatayud 5. Risto Luukkonen 6. Johnny Caldwell 7. KENJI YONEKURA 8. Young Martin 9. Larry Pineda 10. HIRAM BACALLAO There you go, seven fighters missing, mostly from the lower weight classes, not bad at all. I will post them as soon as I can realistically rate and playtest them. Hope the above is helpful rgds Dean |

Great project idea, Dean. Can't wait to see your ratings. The developers appear to have done a really good job of including the top fighters for that time period, or at least from 1960.
What you're doing is what I did for my 1940s universe, only I used old Ring record books and have a great many more fighters to add. Keep up the good work!

When you think about it, that's an awfully impressive job the game has done in including fighters from the time period. 7 out of 80 missing, and only 2 out of 50 from Lightweight and above.

Von Clay
Here is Von Clay the light heavy contender of the early 60's
I have playtested him extensively and am very happy with the results. I have given him a rating for both the Light Heavy and Heavy divisions as he had many fights against heavies such as London, Lavorante, Hunter, Martin and Mildenberger. He comes out rated as a 4for Light Heavy and 2 for Heavy. Sergio Caprari
Thks for the comments guys, will continue with the project at pace.
On further inspection I have found both Gonzalez and Urbina were both in the game (making the game look even more complete in this era). So I have moved on to Sergio Caprari. That's weird, Dean. Did several different kinds of searches and could only find a Hector Vasquez at welterweight during that time period. Will try my Ring record books tonight and see if they rated any such person.
A similar thing happened to me in my 1940s research. Ring had a guy named Young Giant rated at bantamweight one year, but no such person was in the BoxRec database. As I researched who fought whom in rating other fighters to add to the game for my replay, I stumbled on someone named Little Giant that one of them had faced --- right weight and time period. Clicked on his link and found the guy was 0-6 career, but all his opponents were at least credible contenders of the period. Did a BoxRec search with just the last name and found he was the only "Giant" with a link. Why would Ring rank a guy who never won a fight? Hard to say, 60 years later ... but then why some of the guys ranked by WBC, etc., get in is beyond me, too. Will keep looking for your mystery man. I'm sure he will turn up! BTW

Saw him, too, dragon. His opponents about that time were lightweights and feathers, so I doubt it. He and the welter I mentioned are the only ones even close in BoxRec. Hmmmmmmm ...

Bantamweight
Champion - Jose Beccera 1. Alphonse Halimi 2. Piero Rollo 3. Leo Espinosa 4. Danny Kidd 5. Joe Medel 6. Freddie Gilroy 7. Jose Lopez 8. HERMAN VASQUEZ 9. Eder Jofre 10. Alberto Ibarra Dean; Ring Record Book lists the magazine's composite rankings for the year 1960 as: Champion - title vacant. 1. Eder Jofre 2. Alphonse Halimi 3. Piero Rollo 4. Freddie Gilroy 5. Kenji Yonekura 6. Joe Medel 7. Eloy Sanchez 8. Ignacio Pena 9. Jose Lopez 10. Leo Espinosa For 1959, the ratings were: Champion: Joe Becerra 1. Alphonse Halimi 2. Freddie Gilroy 3. Eder Jofre 4. Piero Rollo 5. Danny Kid 6. Leo Espinosa 7. Jose Lopez 8. Kenji Yonekura 9. Ernesto Miranda 10. Herman Marques I checked flyweight and featherweight for the two years as well, and found no Vasquez in any of those, either. FWIW, I think Marques may be your guy and the name was just listed wrong. He was 20-10-1, 6 KOs, from the US, 1957-62. Seems to fill the bill, I think. You might want to compare issues of your magazines and see if it gets changed in a few months ...
