Mesi / Jirov
Mesi-Jirov gets go-ahead!
By Bob Caico The Baby Joe Mesi vs Vassily Jirov battle has been verbally okayed by all parties involved for March 13th in Las Vegas. Mesi will travel to Tulsa today to get in some 'warm weather' training for what he calls his biggest test. "I am looking forward to this fight," said Baby Joe. "This fight is a step closer to taking on the Mike Tyson’s of the world and inching forward to a title shot." Manager, Jack Mesi, says the fight is not signed but we have all agreed to this bout. "It came down to Michael Moorer and Jirov, James Toney took on Jirov to make his splash into the heavyweight ranks. We will use it to reach the next level." Thursday, January 29 2004 (Fightnews.com) ...Thoughts, anyone? |

First, it's 20 degrees in Tulsa, 2 hours west of here.
Second, unless Jirov has faded badly, he should be able to control Mesi and get the win. Maybe Mesi's people know something ... ?

If they were fighting in New York... Jirov by Split or Majority Decision. But since its Vegas... Jirov by Unanimous Decision. This fight, regardless of the outcome, will put to rest any ideas that Joe Mesi may have of fighting Mike Tyson.

I think it's a good matchup. It's about time to see what Mesi's got without getting him killed. He passed the Barrett test (barely) and Jirov is about one more notch up. I'll watch. Everyone seems to want Tyson. It would be nice if boxing could draw some interest without the Tyson circus.

Jirov seems like a pretty good/tough test for Mesi. From what I read, it seemed HBO pushed for Jirov. Moorer was the guy I heard the Mesi people wanted @ first. Should be a good night on HBO on March 13th, first this fight, then Shane & Winky!

Tyson can't beat Mesi today. Tyson has no patience in the ring and no longer has the overpowering abilities to make up for it.
Mesi can box...he can be patient...and he can hit hard. And he'll show up in shape. Tyson is shot after 4 rounds these days. Jirov? Thats another question. I look forward to the fight...and I hope Mesi wins. |

Jirov is tough but has no defense. Mesi hits very hard, much harder than anyone Jirov has faced. Mesi has lots of weaknesses, poor defense, poor stamina (as revealed by the Barrett fight). However, I don't see Jirov hanging in there with Mesi long enough to wear Mesi down. I think Mesi will win by TKO or KO in 6.

Anyone ever rate Jirov for TBCB?
Never mind, I overlooked him. You must forgive me, I so rarely look at active fighters... ![]()

Personally, I think it makes for an interesting matchup.
As far as Mesi goes, I'm going to have to agree with some of the other posters---I don't think much of him. His chin is suspect. That being said, Jirov might be tailored made for him. He's gonna just keep coming forward which will be a positive for the bigger Mesi. It should be quite intriguing to say the least.

I decided to sim it and Jirov cold cocked him a few times with a tko win in the 3rd. Mesi went down twice once in the second and once in the third. He didn't offer much offense or defense. If he beats Jirov, I still won't be a believer.

If Mesi catches him flush, Jirov will go down.
Will Mesi be able to fight his fight? Will Jirov put on an extra twenty pounds and lose his speed? Will Jirov's bombs have the same effect on a heavyweight, albeit a small one, as they do on cruiserweights? Tune in and find out, fellow ring-rats! Cap

I'm not sure that Jirov keeps anything by adding 20 lbs other than his ability to apply pressure to Mesi.
Based on a recent article I read concerning Joe Mesi, my feeling is that "Baby" Joe's handlers would never take this fight if they thought for a moment their fighter would have a chance of losing. Although stranger things have happened, I just don't see a blown up crusierweight as defenseless as Jirov moving up and fighting a guy that does have punch.

Jirov / Butts in the seats.
To give Mesi trouble, Jirov would have to jab often to keep Mesi from loading up with that right hand. From what I've seen of Jirov, he throws hooks and uppercuts well, but he is less than impressive from the outside using the jab or cross as a weapon; another words, he fights best on the inside were he can throw all of those short hooks and uppercuts.
Mesi doesn't box well and should allow Jirov to swarm him often which, much to the enjoyment of HBO, would allow for an interesting fight as long as Jirov can take the punch of a real heavyweight. If nothing else, Mesi can punch with the best of them on the inside. I'll take Mesi in around 7 rounds, because I don't think Jirov has the movement or the smoothness to box and take advantage of Mesi's major weakness which is DEFENSE, MOBILITY, and ENDURENCE. Jirov will try to swarm him and will eat one too many righthands and go down for the count. HBO will feed Mesi to Byrd sometime mid-summer in at which time, Byrd will tatoo Mesi and stop him in the 10th. But the fight will be in Buffalo and they will sell 80,000 tickets and around 800,000 Buffalo wings, much to the chagrin of our feathered friends, and HBO will make big $$$$$$$$$$ off of a Mesi championship fight. If Mesi does two things well its, throw a powerful righthand and put butts in the seats. Mark Jones Utica, NY
