Hitting Power seems off for some fighters.
I finally purchased the game tonight and it is great fun. I was going through some bouts with my Step Father. Who knows his boxing from way back. Had me put an old time Heavyweight fighter in a match by the name of Carmine Vingo. As he was fighting I noticed that his hitting power rating was one. I said to my step father this guy Carmine was a light hitter huh? He said no he was supposed to be a fairly hard hitter. Who once fought Rocky Marciano. In that fight Rocky put him down 2 times in the early rounds. Then either the 4th, or 5th round Vingo staggered Marciano with a hard shot. My Step Father told me Marciano was staggered for half of that round. However Marciano shook it off and ko'd Vingo, I think in the 6th. Anyway going by what I was told we decided to look up his record. Carmine Vingo's Pro record was 16 - 2 - 0 with 7 ko's . Judging by his record he doesn't appear to be such a devastating puncher. However it seems he does deserve more than a 1 for hitting power. If you go by what Marciano said in 1962. He said his fight with Carmine Vingo was his toughest fight of his career.
Another fighter who seems to be underated in hitting power would be Archie Moore. He is rated a 6 in hitting power. However his record 183 - 24 - 9 with 130 ko's. That's a helluva lot of ko's My Step Father felt his hitting power rating should be higher. I know that a lot of this is all subjective, and that we can change the ratings as we see fit. However with over 3000 fighters in the game I'm wondering how many ratings may be way off? I can only imagine how hard it was for the developers to rate every single fighter in so many different areas. Still it would be nice to know that most of the ratings are pretty much on target. Has anyone tried to undertake the humongous task of going over all the fighters ratings in this game? Perhaps we can have a section on this board. Where we can post the ratings of fighters that we feel badly need to be re-rated in some areas? Then others can give their feedback.

You should take the "Toughest fight of my career" comment from Marciano with a grain of salt. Consider that he nearly killed Vingo, and the comment came after that fact.
From what Jim Trunzo has said, the HP is just one factor in how many kayos a guy will get. Also, scrutinize the opponents. Some fighters were brought along carefully by their managers and were fed easy opponents as confidence builders. Ask yourself how many of the opponents had a successful career just prior to or after losing to the fighter in question. But, hey! If you don't like how a fighter is rated in a particular category and you'd like to see him win more often against quality fighters, just give him a boost. Just remember that isn't how the game developers saw him. Cap

Vingo only had 7 ko's in 16 wins. I'm guessing here, but, most of his fights would be against guys rated 0. Not even good enough to make it in the game. Yes,Vingo caught Marciano's attention. However,I'm not led to believe that Marciano was ever in any big trouble. Against higher rated competition in the game Vingo's power is pretty acurate IMOP.

Thanks for the replys and the insight. You all bring up some very valid points, I need to consider. Knowing now that the hitting power rating is basically a measure of a boxers 1 punch power. Does make it easier to accept why some fighters who appear to be rated low, is probably justified. If I do adjust some ratings, I will definitely do lots of playtesting. Thanks for the good advice..
