IMO we need an official rating of Duk Koo Kim (which might be hard since his only big fight was the one that killed him) since he was such an important figure to boxing history. Once again just my .02$

As a boxing n00b, why is he so important? (Serious question.)

Immediately after his death, they stopped 15 round fights.

here's a good article on it.

I always wondered why they stopped 15 round fights.
Now I have the answer, thanks mh2365

NP, The fight had a lasting effect on me. Boom Boom was one of my favorite fighters growing up (after watching him lose to my favorite Arguello) and I couldn't believe the tenacity and courage Kim showed in that fight. He just kept coming at Mancini and I think was in the fight right up until the end.

It saddened me to find out he died days later. Just reading that article on him that I posted even saddened me more, because I knew about his mom but didn't know about the Ref. I do know that Mancini was never the same. His killer instinct was gone. His fights with Bramble were the highlight of this. He had Bramble hurt in both fights early and didn't finish him. He did have 2 KO's and one TKO after that fight, it just seemed to rob us of two fighters that night. He was only 21 at the time of the Kim fight and only fought 8 more times. I remember reading an article with him way back then, that he said once he learned about the mom he just didn't want to fight anymore.

There were some great little guys back then and Mancini should of been an exciting fighter to watch over the next decade. When i think of 80's boxing it isn't the Heavies that come to mind. It's the little guys like Salvadore Sanchez (although he died in 1982), Wilfredo Gomez, Azumah Nelson, Alexis Arguello, Bazooka Limon, Bobby Chacon, Edwin Rosario, Jose Luis Ramirez, Frankie Randall (I'd like to see a retired rating of him not the one still fighting at 43), and Hector Camacho who was a joy to watch before Rosario scared him into a runner.

I would like to see an official rating of Kim by JT.

Also I would like to point out that there were several 15 round fights after the Kim fight. The fight was for the WBA championship and despite launching an investigation into the effects, they didn't stop until years later. The WBC, however, stopped it immediately. I didn't want anyone to think that there were never anymore 15 rounders but the Kim fight was the instigation in stopping it.

MH2365......I totally agree with you. The 80's / Early 90's were alot about the little guys...(or not so little)...I grew up near Detroit...so we followed "the hit man"...Tommy Hearns faithfully, 100%...

I also loved watching tapes of K. Galaxy (JBW Champ)...and of course Jeff Fenech....they along with your list were some great fighters to watch.....(Fenech was definitely robbed in that first encounter with Azumah Nelson.....great fight though...)

I'd also like to see Kim rated.

I was a huge Mancini fan, but I think Bramble was just all wrong for Ray. Bramble had VERY long arms for a LW, Ray just had to go through to much firepower to get any work done. I seem to remember scoring the 2nd fight for Ray but I was only like 12 years old. Anyone else remember if that fight was that close or not?

Fenech certainly wasn't robbed in the rematch. Melbourne was it?
