Doyle Baird, Fate Davis
Is anybody willing to rate Doyle Baird and Fate Davis ? Growing up in Akron, Ohio in the 60's these were two of my favorite fighters.
I see that Gorilla Jones, Gus Ruhlin, Ron Anderson, and Ron Delaney (who my uncle was friends with growing up) are already in the game. I go back to the days of Avalon-Hill, Haffner, ABA and Trunzo's boxing games and this is by far the best. Followed this forum since day 1, and there are not many gaming communities where the people are so knowledgable and willing to help others. Thanks to all of you you have given me many hours of enjoyment ! One last thing. Is there anyway to correct misspellings on your post? I saw I spelled Baird Baired. I went in and corrected it within my post, but on the listings of all the posts it is still incorrect. I hate looking stupid. I ask for someone to rate him and I can't even spell his name correctly! If I was better at rating I would try to help you out for no other reason than you had a great first post ....
It reminds me of when I was 11 (1979) and I used my allowance to buy Avalon-Hill's Title Bout ... my parents were stunned at the amount of time I spent playing it .... my brother who is two years older wouldn't play it with me ( he has the attention span of a gnat) but my dad would .... We had many great hours playing it and I had many solo hours logged into it .... I truly love this game and find myself thinking about while lying in bed at night .... I was burnt out on boxing before this game was released and now I find myself watching Thursday night Shobox and ESPN fights just to see younger guys .... My 14 year old boy was heart broken about Wvlad the other night .... I told him about my heart break for Hector Camacho ... anyone who remembers what a man he was before the Rosario fight can appreciate my feeling .... after Rosario laid the whupping on him all he did was run .... My boy made the mistake the other day of saying Wvlad would be his Alexis Arguello, I had to correct him, because my heartache of seeing him lose to Pryor was that of a great warrior finally falling in defeat .... Wvlad had not earned that respect it was more of a Camacho heartache ... sorry to thread jack, it's the beer speaking .... welcome to our community |

I found this article written by Jim Amato about Doyle Baird which gives a good indication of the fighter he was. I had wanted to go to this fight at the Akron Rubber Bowl but at age 17 and not having a job $25 seemed like a lot of money. I also missed out on the Ali-Wepner fight at the Richfield Coliseum, again, because of money.
(IB-June 17, 2003) - The Rubber City of Akron has probably never produced anything resilient then a boxer named Doyle Baird. Rugged and balding, he was often compared to Carmen Basilio in looks and his swarming style. After a fine amateur career he turned professional in 1966 under the wing of Don Elbaum. After defeating Ted Wright two years later he had amassed a 23-2 record. On October 14, 1968, Doyle fought middleweight champion Nino Benvenuti in a non-title bout at the Akron Rubber Bowl. There may have never been a more dubious draw decision rendered. By almost all ringsider accounts the champion had been beaten that night by tenacious Baird. One year later Doyle outpointed Don Fullmer in Cleveland to show he was no fluke. Back in Cleveland three months later he was out boxed by Hall of Famer, Emile Griffith. On September 12, 1970, Doyle again met Benvenuti in a non-title bout at Bari, Italy. Nino stopped Doyle in the tenth round. It would be Nino's last victory. In 1971, Baird engaged in a thrilling three fight series with the tough Mike Pusateri winning two out of three. Moving out of the middleweight division, Doyle received a shot at the W. B. A. Light Heavyweight title. On December 15, 1971, Baird challenged Vicente Rondon who proved to be too strong retaining his crown via an eighth round stoppage. A kayo loss to Jean Claude Bouttier in France in 1972 finished Doyle as a serious contender. Since Doyle's retirement, he has been active in training amateur boxers in the Akron area. Although he considered Benvenuti a great boxer, Baird feels Griffith was a better all around fighter. Being a natural middleweight Baird said he took the Rondon bout for the title shot and the money. Doyle said he did not make much money during his career, but he would do it all over again. His love of boxing has helped many youngsters in the community. Home |

Looks like Baird fought some pretty good fighters rated in the game. Won against a couple of 6's, 7 and a 8. Lost to Griffith rated (11), had a draw and loss to Benvenuti rated (11). I've rated Baird and will post my take on him below. Here is a ticket to the akron rubber bowl and welcome to the board. Scot |

SAL,
I just fought Benvenuti (11) against Baird (7). In real life they fought to a 10 round draw. In my replay it went 96-94, 96-94, 95-95...... a majority decision for Baird. No knockdowns, a cut under Baird's eye late in the fight. Baird won the 10th round or it would have been a draw. Can't get much closer than that ! I'll be trying Fate Davis next but don't expect too much, just a lot of enjoyment. Again, I thank you for these ratings and for getting them so quickly. |

No problem CliffS
Enjoyed rating them. The wind is blowing about 500 mph here so I'm not doing much outside. Had plenty of time to rate and play test these guys. Benvenuti and Baird had a controversal draw in 1968 and in a rematch Benvenuti KO'ed Baird in the 10th rd. in Italy on 9/12/1970. Scot |
