Augustus vs. Burton
well what is there to be said about the main event tonight on Tuesday night fights.
Hometown ref....hometown judges...and a fighter who clearly dominated the fight gets royally screwed. A perfect example of why this sport sometimes...totally sucks. |

I agree 100%. But I must add that Augustus was ill-served by his corner. They should have told him "This is Michigan. You are turning the referee against you, and that's not a good idea. Unless you can score a knockout, you run the risk of losing this fight." If that was obvious to the TV announcers, it should have been obvious to Augustus and his corner. The ref was clearly upset at Augustus.
Unless a fighter is as incandescent and clearly dominant as Ali in his prime, he needs to cut back on the showboating or he risks screwing himself. In a sport where judges and referees have so much power, it's not good to get under their skin.

Antonin...what you said is very true...but in this case the ref was clearly against Augustus from the start...I just wish there was a way this sort of crap could be avoided in the first place.
That ref should be suspended upon further review and if it were my decision, he'd never work a fight again. I wish boxing had one governing body ruling the sport everywhere...I know I'm asking for a perfect world here...but unless Augustus did knock him out...there was no way he was winning this fight...the ref and judges made that perfectly clear. Augustus never should have been in that position in the first place...professional boxing should be ashamed. It was a crooked fight...clear and simple. The ref and 2 of the 3 judges were on the take...there is no other way to explain the actions...the announcers said it all...it's fights like these that turn people away from the great sport of boxing...and they are right. |

like rooting for your home football team, no matter how partial you say you are you do indeed still have a favorite. No one can watch a fight and be completely impartail, even when you watch one with people you dont know you catch yourself saying i like the guy in the green trunks and when he loses you are a little disappointed cause he was "your guy". I will be the first to say it shouldnt happen but it does and will continue to happen, you cant control a persons freewill to decide they like the guy in the red trunks and not the guy in hte green ones. Fights like that suck but they happen, i still love football even if the guy got the touchdown when his foot was clearly out of bounds.

We get to see the Tuesday night Fights show on a Thursday night here in the UK and I watched the fight earlier on today on tape from last night (it's on at about 1 am). I think it was clearly the wrong decision, I only gave Burton 3 rounds, the other 7 went to Augustus for me.
The referee was so biased it's unbelievable. The legitimate knockdown in the 4th which was judged as a low blow just about summed up the result of the fight. Augustus easily won. This kind of thing ruins boxing, but what can you do? I think Augustus was his own enemy in there though, maybe if he hadn't been dancing around acting like a fool he might have been taken more seriously. |

Yeah you gotta love Teddy Atlas giving it to the official from Michigan about the lousy decision. Everybody can see the reasons for a national commision so some form of accountability can be had for michigan boxing, the judges and ref involved.
