How do fighters with losing records wind up fighting for titles?

I've been spending lots of time on Boxrec looking for less-than-skilled (i.e., 1-rated) fighters to rate for TBCB. I keep noticing instances of guys with hideous or so-so records fighting for vacant titles.

For example, on March 9, 2002 one Danny Wofford, with a record of 17-94-2, fought for the vacant WBS Super HW title. Whatever the WBS is, should they be sanctioning a title shot for a guy with a record like that?

I also notice a lot of guys in Asia and Eastern Europe who have very lopsided losing records fighting for national and regional titles. This includes countries like the Philippines and South Korea, both of which have produced world-class fighters.

How does a man with a losing record get a shot at ANY title? Maybe somebody out there could enlighten me as to how these things work. I understand the wierdness that often accompanies the major sanctioning bodies, but some of these guys I'm looking at are really, really lousy fighters--at least according to their records.

i agree this board is dead. I asked for some professional help from the players of the game and with 57 looks and ZERO responses. It dissapointed me. The game is fine i was just looking for some help to get more out of it.To bad the players here dont help each other as do the strat o matic forums.

A fighters rank is determined by his last 10 fights and the amount of performance points received in those fights. A fighter could realistically lose his first 30 fights, win his next 10 and be ranked #1. That's how the game itself works. As for regional titles, they are often given title shots for their performances with fighters just from that region. Let's say Joe Boxer is trying to contend for the Montana Boxing Association Heavyweight title. He fights 3 times a month, but only 1 time every two months in Montana. He loses all his other fights but the Montana one. The people of Montana think this guy is king, though, because they never see him lose, thus the title shot due to his "local" record.

Mudster is very correct. Another point to keep in mind is that there are many fighter's records at boxrec.com that are incomplete. And more often than not, those with incomplete records tend to have more wins missing than losses, because their losses are often against more notable opponents.

In the case of Wofford, though, I think it's a case of a promoter inventing a title to hype his fight (the opponent was Mitch 'Blood' Green, coming out of retirement after four years, so the card obviously needed a little help.) The WBS was allegedly the "World Boxing Syndicate", but I can't find a mention of them sanctioning any fights other than that one.

The players on this board are extremely helpful. This is no means meant as a flame .... but I was one of the ones who "looked" at your question and didn't answer. The reason I didn't is because I couldn't get past the first two lines.

Something about 20-25 lines of text all in one paragraph with nothing to break it up makes me not want to read it.

It seems from some of the answers that you had multiple questions, just friendly advice next time seperate your thoughts and I'll bet you get alot more response. Once again this isn't meant as a flame. If you take it that way I apologize now.

I second my friend there. There are a lot of helpful folks on this board, I'm just not one of them. Once you actually start playing the game or hunting for fighter pics, you tend to forget about the forum. I'm on holiday myself, national "Read a Book" week up here in Canada of course, so I have a little more time to "surf da weeb" what with most of the businesses closed. I never would've got my web page updated otherwise.

Hang in there. Sooner or later someone will happen along and give you a lift. Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Vaya con dios, compadres!
