Blast From the Past!
Here's an interesting quote from a fight report penned by the late great Lou Marsh for the Maxie Rosenbloom-Charlie Belanger non-title fight won narrowly by Rosenbloom, then the World Light Heavyweight champion:
Toronto.June 15, 1931 - "...Belanger went in with both eyes bulwarked with surgeon's tape. It took Rosenbloom four rounds to even knock the decoration off one eye." Just in case you younguns ever wondered how the old timers were able to fight so frequently. Charlie Belanger was a Metis from the Winnipeg, Manitoba area. As a mere stripling, he competed in the 1924 Paris Olympics for Canada. He was a talented fighter who never reached the heights he could have under the right trainers and manager. Cap Noted Toronto sportswriter Lou Marsh often acted as a referee or judge at top boxing cards held at the Mutual Street Arena by the Shamrock Club.

I was an extra in the CBC production of "Riel" many, many, years ago. Your little blast triggered that memory. |
